Battery heads to West coast

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery heads to the West coast this week for a three game road-swing that see's Charleston play the Portland Timbers on Thursday, the Seattle Sounders on Saturday and the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday. All three games kick off at 10:00 PM EST and can be heard live in Charleston on Progressive 730 or on the internet at www.charlestonbattery.com.

This will be the Battery's first visit to the West coast since the 2001 season. Charleston lost a pair of games that year to the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps. In the newly restructured USL First Division all 12 teams must play each other once home and away.

The Portland Timbers have started their 2005 campaign strongly with two wins and two ties. The Timbers are led by 2004 Coach of the Year Bobby Howe who guided Portland to the 2004 regular season championship. Howe played 11 years with the EPL's West Ham United and has been active in US Soccer since 1977.

The Seattle Sounders are still looking for their first win of the season; after two games Seattle has managed just one tie. Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is in his fourth year with the Club, he played for the Sounders in both the NASL and the USL First Division.

The Vancouver Whitecaps are the only USL First Division side yet to concede a goal. The Whitecaps have played three games with one win and two ties. Vancouver's roster features two ex-Battery players, defender Mark Watson and midfielder Steve Klein.

The Battery's next home match is on Saturday, May 28 vs the Atlanta Silverbacks at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.

Greg Simmonds named USL First Division Player of the Week Charleston Battery forward Greg Simmonds has been named the USL First Division player of the week following his two goal performance last Friday night versus the Toronto Lynx. Simmonds tallied a goal in each half to lead the Battery to a come-from-behind victory over the Lynx.

The 1999 USL First Division Rookie of the Year, Simmonds spent two seasons with the Hershey Wildcats before joining MLS' Miami Fusion in 2001. He played for the Rochester Raging Rhinos (2002) and Richmond Kickers (2003) before joining the Battery last season; his two year totals include 8 goals and 5 assists in 29 games played.
