Battery faces Puerto Rico and Miami

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Puerto Rico Islanders this Friday night in Puerto Rico, kick off is set for 8:00 PM. Sunday the Battery concludes its two match road-swing with a 6 PM game versus the Miami FC Blues. Both games will be broadcast live in Charleston on REAL 1340 AM and will also be available on the web at USLLive.com.

Charleston (10-7-6, 36 points) enters the weekend in 3rd position in the USL First Division. The Battery drew 0-0 with the Atlanta Silverbacks in its last league match played last Saturday night in Atlanta.

Puerto Rico (12-6-5, 41 points) currently leads the USL First Division; the Islanders notched a resounding 3-0 victory last Friday night over the defending USL1 champs the Seattle Sounders in a game played in Seattle.

Puerto Rico is one of only two teams to have defeated the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium this year winning by a score of three goals to one on July 12. Lazo Alavanja had given Charleston a first-half lead but strikes from Kendal Jadeosingh, Christian Arietta and Jonathan Steele ensured the Islanders victory.

Charleston plays Puerto Rico three times during the 2008 regular season; the third match is scheduled for Friday, August 29 at Blackbaud Stadium.

Puerto Rico qualified for the 2008 CONCACAF Champions league by finishing as a semifinalist in the Caribbean Football Union's Club Championships; the Islanders play a two game play-in series with LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica with games scheduled for Wednesday August 27 and Wednesday, September 3.

On Sunday the Battery squares off against the Miami FC Blues at Tropical Park Stadium, Miami; kick off is set for 6 PM. The Battery tied Miami 2-2 in a game played in Miami back on the opening day of the season; Dominic Cianciarulo scored both Charleston goals.

Miami (5-9-9, 24 points) is currently in last place in the USL First Division.

The Battery defeated Miami by a score of three goals to one in the return match at Blackbaud Stadium on May 9. Miami took the lead through Alex Afonso but two goals from Randi Patterson and one from Osvaldo Alonso swept Charleston to victory.

Miami lost 3-2 to the Carolina RailHawks last Friday night in Cary, NC. Forward Alex Afonso leads the Blues offence with a league-leading 11 goals in 21 games played.
