Battery Defeats College of Charleston in Pre-Season Scrimmage

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the College of Charleston by a score of four goals to one at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium Thursday afternoon in a pre-season scrimmage. Midfielder Adam Mena led the way with a two-goal first half performance to lead the Battery past the Cougars.

The Battery opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after forward Heviel Cordoves was pulled down just outside the box earning a free-kick. Mena converted the chance curling a right- footed shot around the wall and into the goal.

Mena doubled the advantage for the Battery three minutes later after an excellent cross to the back-post from midfielder Andre Lewis. Mena pulled off his defender and snapped a header into the top corner.

Charleston made it 3-0 on the hour mark with a good individual goal from midfielder Dante Marini. Marini dispossessed a Cougar defender in the penalty-area and fired home into the bottom left corner.

Five minutes later it was 4-0 after defender Quinton Griffith latched onto a loose ball, then finished clinically driving a hard shot past the goalkeeper.

The College of Charleston scored a consolation goal minutes later after former Cougar Shawn Ferguson handled in the box conceding a penalty kick that midfielder Nico Rittemeyer converted.

Next up for the Battery is a game versus Clemson University on Saturday afternoon at Blackbaud Stadium, kick off is set for 1 PM.
