Charleston, SC. Rudolph Mayard and Lamar Neagle scored the goals as the Charleston Battery knocked the USSF Division Two Carolina RailHawks out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 1,409. With the win Charleston advances to the third round and will play Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire in Chicago next Tuesday night (June 29).

The Battery came close to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute after Tom Heinemann passed the ball wide to midfielder Rudolph Mayard. Mayard cut inside Carolina defender David Hayes then fired a shot on target forcing a save from Eric Reed.

Five minutes later Charleston were ahead after winning a pair of corners. On the first corner former Battery defender just managed to head clear as Charleston threatened at the back post. On the second attempt midfielder Stephen Armstrong curled a ball into the middle and Rudolph Mayard headed the ball home off the underside of the cross-bar.

The Battery doubled its advantage in the 42nd minute after Alioune Gueye slipped a pass to Lamar Neagle just inside the box. Neagle turned past his defender and finished neatly into the left corner.

Charleston continued to press after the break and just before the hour mark Neagle broke across the half-way line with the ball. He pulled away from Carolina defender Mark Schulte but his right-footed shot curled over the bar.

Minutes later Charleston came close again as Neagle again found space at the edge of the box. Neagle passed the ball square to forward Tom Heinemann who set it back for Alioune Gueye, but Gueye's first time volley flashed wide of the post.

Carolina pulled a goal back in the 64th minute after forward Etienne Barbara played a quick pass across to defender Greg Shield who finished neatly at the near post.

Battery goalkeeper Tim Melia made a good save just before full-time after midfielder Matt Watson drove a low shot in from distance. Melia parried the ball clear and Charleston defender Colin Falvey hooked it away to safety before Carolina could react to the loose ball.
