Charleston, SC- The Charleston Battery defeated Major League Soccer's MetroStars tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of one goal to none in front of a crowd of 2,200. The game was a fourth round Lamar Hunt US Open Cup fixture; with the win the Battery advances to the quarter-finals where it will face the Rochester Raging Rhinos.

Rochester defeated MLS's New England Revolution in a game also played tonight.

Charleston was the aggressor early on and midfielder Gabe Valencia came close to scoring in the 12th minute. Forward, Paul Conway headed the ball into the box. Valencia ran onto the pass and stroked the ball first-time with his left foot but it cannoned back into play off the post.

In the 20th minute the MetroStars were also denied by the wood-work. Forward Cornell Glen scrambled the ball across the face of the goal to midfielder Mike Magee. Magee managed to get a shot off but the ball glanced of the left upright and away into safety.

In the 26th minute Valencia caused more problems for the MetroStars with a darting run outside the box. He evaded two tackles then lashed a shot at the goal that was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper, Zach Wells.

Charleston finally broke the deadlock in the 48th minute. The ball was played long to the edge of the penalty-area. Conway flicked the ball on as he was challenged by defender Eddie Pope. Midfielder Steve Klein was first to the loose ball and he lifted it over the sliding challenge of Wells and into the goal.

The MetroStars pressured looking for an equalizer and forward John Wolyniec had a chance in the 64th minute. He latched onto long pass at the edge of the box but his shot missed just high of the target.

In the 72nd minute the MetroStars were awarded a penalty-kick after Eddie Gaven was brought down in the box. Magee stepped up to take the kick but drove the ball into the cross-bar. It ricocheted back into play but the chance vanished as Charleston were awarded a free-kick for a push.

The Battery will travel to Rochester for the quarter-final match, the game is scheduled for Wednesday, August 4 at Frontier Field; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
