Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. Randi Patterson and Aaron King supplied the goals as the Battery extended its win-streak to five with a comfortable 2-0 victory versus the Atlanta Silverbacks Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 4,861. The win ensures that Charleston (5-1-2, 17 points) remains in first position in the USL First Division.
Charleston started brightly and forward Lazo Alavanja was put through on goal in only the 4th minute. Alavanja rounded the goalkeeper but was forced wide before he could shoot; he managed to cross the ball but his pass was cleared out of danger.
Atlanta responded and almost scored in the 13th minute from a spectacular attempt by striker Ansu Toure. Toure received a cross at the back-post but his bicycle-kick attempt flew wide.
The next period of the game saw the sides exchange chances. Charleston came close with a headed attempt by Alavanja that rose over the bar, then Atlanta defender Matt Bobo saw his glancing header from a corner-kick miss just high.
The Battery broke the deadlock in the 30th minute after winger Chris Williams nodded the ball down expertly at the penalty-spot. Patterson ran onto the pass and slipped a shot under the body of Atlanta goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh. The goal was his league-leading sixth of the season.
Charleston continued to enjoy the majority of possession but Atlanta almost leveled at the hour-mark after a fine run by Toure. Toure lashed a shot in from just outside the box but goalkeeper Keith Wiggans was well positioned and made the save.
Alavanja almost brought the house down in the 67th minute with a thumping strike from 40 yards out that just missed to the left of the goal. McIntosh was caught unawares by the attempt but watched gratefully as the ball whizzed past the post.
Substitute forward Aaron King put the game beyond doubt at the 75 minute mark polishing off a goal-mouth scramble with a nice right-footed finish from the edge of the box.
The Battery remains at Blackbaud Stadium Wednesday night for a 7:30 PM match versus the Vancouver Whitecaps.
