
Baseball America names Austin to All-Star team

ROCKFORD, Ill. â Baseball America magazine has once again honored a Rockford RiverHawk.
Veteran right fielder Rich Austin was named a first-team member of the publication's Independent League All-Star Team, the second straight year the RiverHawks have had a first-team representative. Baseball America's 2003 Independent League Player of the Year was Rockford pitcher Jason Shelley.
This season, Austin was voted Frontier League Most Valuable Player. He hit a league-leading .359 with 15 home runs and 77 RBI. Austin set team records in all three Triple Crown categories. The Kansas City Royals have signed him to a Class AA contract for 2005.
Two other Frontier League players â Richmond closer Chad Sosebee and River City outfielder Brody Jackson â were named to the second team. Two former Frontier Leaguers also made the Indy All-Stars.
Somerset Patriots shortstop Victor Rodriguez, who set Atlantic League records for batting average and hits, was named the 2004 Player of the Year. Rodriguez hit .371 with 25 home runs and 111 RBI.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league which will play its 13th season in 2005. Season tickets are now available by calling the box office.
