
Barrage suffer first loss of the season

Boston, MA (June 24, 2006) - The Philadelphia Barrage of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier outdoor lacrosse league, lost their first game of the season to the Boston Cannons at Nickerson Field Saturday night in front of 6,190 fans. Conor Gill (BOS) was named Bud Light MVP for his six point (2G, 6A) performance in the game. Both teams are now tied for first place with records of 5-1.
Boston got off to a winning start early in the first quarter with goals by Chris Fiore and David Evans. With 8:54 left in the in first, goaltender Brian Dougherty took a shot in the stomach and was taken out of the game, Kevin Keenan took his place. Twenty-two second later, Dougherty returned to the goal. Attackman Will Phillips put the Barrage on the board with a goal at 6:03. Rookie midfielder Matt Poskay scored his first of the night, giving the Cannons a two-goal lead. Philadelphia rounded out the quarter with three straight goals by B.J. Prager, Justin Smith and Kyle Sweeney putting the Barrage ahead by on at the end of the first. Conor Gill ended Philadelphia's scoring streak with a goal early in the second to tie the game at four. For the second time in the game, Philadelphia took the lead with a goal by the rookie midfielder Greg Peyser, followed by two goals by Matt Striebel. Boston attackman John Christmas, an Ardmore, PA native, scored his first goal of the night, followed by a goal by Fiore, leaving the Cannons down by one. Striebel scored his third goal of the night with 34 seconds left in the first half giving Philadelphia a two-goal lead. The score to end the first half was Philadelphia 8, Boston 6. Dougherty recorded eight saves in the half for Philadelphia, along with Boston goaltender Chris Garrity.
Midfielder Smith scored his second goal for the Barrage early in the third, giving them a three goal lead. Boston went on a three-goal run, with goals by Bill Glading, Brett Bucktooth and Evans, to tie the game at nine. Their scoring streak continued with three more goals by Evans, Chris Passavia and Christmas.
Philadelphia came alive with two minutes left with goals by Prager, Smith and Roy Colsey, tying the game at 12 to end the quarter. Colsey scored his second of the night to start off the fourth quarter, giving the Barrage the lead. Fiore scored for the Cannons tying the game, followed by a goal from Evans, putting them up by one. Smith scored his fourth of the night for the Barrage to tie the game at 14. Each time went goal for goal to tie the game at 15. Chazz Woodson scored the game-winning goal with 4:10 left on the clock for the Cannons.
