
Barrage defeat Lizards 10-8

Philadelphia, PA (July 20, 2006) - The Philadelphia Barrage of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier outdoor lacrosse league, defeated the Long Island Lizards at Villanova Stadium in front of 3,069 fans. Justin Smith was named the Bud Light MVP for his four-point performance (3G, 1A).
After the last time these two met, Long Island went ahead by eight goals, in tonight's game, each team went goal for goal to start the first quarter, keeping the score. Long Island started the scoring off with a goal by Adam Borcz, followed by a goal from Philadelphia's Justin Smith. Chris Massey scored for the Lizards, followed by another goal from Smith. Tim Goettleman scored for the Lizards, giving them a one-goal lead at the end of the first. Long Island jumped to a three-goal lead to start the second with a goal from Austin Garrison and another from Goettleman. Philadelphia then went on a five-goal run to finish the first half. Goal scorers for the Barrage were Bobby Horsey, B.J. Prager, Michael Springer, Greg Peyser and a two-point goal by Shaun Lyons. The score to end the half was Philadelphia 8, Long Island 5.
Keith Cromwell started off the scoring early in the third for Long Island. Brian "Doc" Dougherty and the Barrage defense held the Lizards scoreless for the remainder of the third. With 1:54 left in the third, Smith scored his third of the night for the Barrage to end the quarter. Borcz scored his second of the night, a two-pointer, for the Lizards early in the fourth, leaving them trailing by one. Lyons scored his second of the night, giving the Barrage a two-point cushion with 11:15 left in fourth. Dougherty held the Lizards scoreless for the rest of the second half, eventually leading to the 10-8 victory for Philadelphia.
Philadelphia looks to continue a winning streak against the 2005 MLL Champions the Baltimore Bayhawks Thursday, July 27 at Villanova Stadium.
