Jacksonville Barracudas News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Lyle Steenbergen's goal 1:27 into overtime gave the Jacksonville Barracudas a thrilling 1-0 win over the Lakeland Loggerheads in front of 4,302 at the new Arena.

The Barracudas (9-2-0, 18 pts.) have now won six in a row. The Barracudas have not lost since November 28th when they were beaten 6-2 by Miami. Tonight's win, keeps Jacksonville three points ahead of second place Orlando (7-4-1, 15 pts.), who were 2-1 winners tonight over Macon. The other WHA2 game saw Miami knock off Alabama 4-3 in a shootout.

In overtime, Neil Wilkinson's shot from the point went wide and nearly left the Loggerheads zone. Winger Mike Wirll beat the Macon defender to the puck and with a no-look pass, hit Steenbergen who went in alone and tucked it behind Loggerhead's goaltender Tyler Murray for the win.

Barracudas goaltender Nate Ziemski made 18 saves and earned his first career shutout. Defenseman Mike Johnson's seven game scoring streak, and Klage Kaebel's five game goal scoring streak both came to and end tonight.

Tonight's game also featured the Barracudas giving out a free concession to every fan in attendance. The Barracudas also gave out nearly 7,000 free tickets to the New Years Eve game with Alabama for fans who felt inconvenienced by the long lines and waits opening night.

"I think we really showed the hockey fans of Jacksonville that we are a team for the fans," Director of Communications Woody Carlson said. "The fans came out and saw a great hockey game in a beautiful arena, got a free hotdog, got free tickets to the Alabama game New Years Eve, and got to go on the ice after the game and meet the players. You can't ask for anything better than that," Carlson added.

The Barracudas also presented a check to the North Florida Hockey Association's Jr. Barracudas for over $13,000. For the past six weeks, the Jr. Barracudas players have been selling Barracudas hockey tickets. A portion of the sales went back to youth hockey to help curb the high cost of ice-time and equipment.

The Barracudas are back in action tomorrow night against Lakeland as they start a stretch of six in a row on the road. The Barracudas won't return home until a New Years Eve match-up with the Alabama Slammers.

Catch all the live action of Barracudas hockey at www.jacksonvillebarracudas.com through IRN.fm. Woody Carlson brings you the call starting with the Cudas Pre-Game Show tomorrow night at 6:50 from the Lakeland Center.
