Barracudas Week in Review

February 24, 2003 - SPHL (SPHL)
Jacksonville Barracudas News Release

The Barracudas played four games this past week, again losing three tough ones.

The week started with the ‘Cudas facing the Winston Salem Parrots in the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday night. The team played one of their best games of the year and took a 5-1 victory in the process. Jamie Miller recorded a hat trick and Jason Vermeulen and Kory Baker added goals for the locals. Paul Vincent tallied three assists in the win.

The team then traveled to Knoxville, TN to take on the Ice Bears in a two game set. Thursday night's game was an exciting match up and provided the 2,883 in attendance a look at what ice hockey is all about. There was scoring, penalties and fights....all the ingredients for a great game. Knoxville held a 4-3 advantage with less than two minutes to play when centerman Paul Vincent picked up a loose puck at center ice, split two defensemen, faked the goalie and put the puck in the upper right corner of the net to light the red light. The game was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation. However, the Ice Bears tallied the winning goal just 1:12 into the overtime session and came away with a hard fought 5-4 victory. Jamie Miller, Sean Ritchlin and Kory Baker also had goals for the locals. Rob Miller added two assists.

The following night yielded the same result.....a 5-4 Knoxville win; this time in regulation. Paul Vincent continued his hot scoring with two goals and two assists. Jason Vermeulen and Rob Miller each added one goal while Jamie Miller had two assists for the night. The game was marred by penalties....a total of 130 minutes being assessed. Jacksonville accumulated 86 minutes and the Ice Bears had 44 minutes in the sin bin.

After an eleven hour trip from Knoxville to Orlando, the ‘Cudas took on the league- leading Seals and looked road weary from the onset. Just eleven seconds into the fray, Orlando tallied a goal and was the game was never in doubt from that point on. Orlando tallied three goals in the first 48 seconds of the first period to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Jacksonville had goals from Paul Vincent and Jay Niemiec and two assists from Rob Miller. However, the night belonged to the Seals and they continued on their path to a league championship with a convincing 7-2 victory.

The Barracudas return to the friendly confines of the Coliseum for the next seven games. Thursday night, February 27, the Cape Fear Fire Antz will make their final appearance of the season in Jacksonville. The Antz are now coached by the former General Manager of the ‘Cudas, Bryan Wells and that should make for an interesting game. Face off is set for 7:00 PM.

Friday night, the Macon Trax wheel into our fair city. The Trax have been one of the hottest teams in the league over the past three weeks as they make a push to maintain their third place status. Face off will be at 7:30 PM. Saturday, March 1, the league-leading Orlando Seals make another appearance at the Coliseum with the face off scheduled for 2:30 PM.

All games will be web cast over www.sportsjuice.com or jacksonvillebarracudas.com.
