Barracudas Trim Down Training Camp Roster

October 24, 2006 - SPHL (SPHL)
Jacksonville Barracudas News Release

Following the first week of camp and a win in their first pre-season game, the Jacksonville Barracudas have made cuts, trimming their roster down to 21 players.

Released from training camp are forwards Aki Hyyppa, Mikko Smura, Josh McNair, Jay Pauli and Brad Hawkins, defenseman Severii Salomma, and goaltenders Jamie Tompkins and Mark Boudreau.

Training camp will continue until Thursday, when final cuts will be made. The Barracudas can carry a roster of 18 players, so there are two more players still to be cut.

Camp has steadily evolved from being primarily based on evaluation of the players, to preparing for the upcoming season opening road trip, beginning with a tilt against last season's President's Cup Champions Knoxville Ice Bears. In today's session, special attention was given to special teams, as the SPHL adapts to NHL-style rules and zero tolerance on obstruction.

Last week much of the focus was on the players' individual skill level, concentrating on one-on-one, and two-on-two drills, along with scrimmages to simulate game-type situations.

The Barracudas return to the ice on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. for another two-hour session. The session is once again at Skate World, which is located at 3605 Phillips Hwy, near the corner of Phillips and Emerson. Barracudas fans are more than welcome to attend.

The Barracudas' first home game of the 2006-2007 season is on Saturday, November 4th, at 7:05 P.M. For information on Barracudas season tickets or Flex Packs contact the Barracudas office at 904-367-1423, or visit the team's website at www.jaxcudas.com.
