Barracudas Prepare for First Game

October 25, 2007 - SPHL (SPHL)
Jacksonville Barracudas News Release

The Jacksonville Barracudas are looking to play spoilers tonight, as they prepare to face off against the Twin City Cyclones in Winston-Salem, NC at 7:30PM EST. Head Coach Rick Allain will lead a team full of familiar faces to Barracudas fans, as they begin their quest make it back to the SPHL Championship Final, with hopes of winning it all this season.

The Barracudas will attempt to spoil the home opener for the Cyclones, as the SPHL makes its return to Winston-Salem, NC. The SPHL iced a team in Winston-Salem called the Polar Twins, in it's first season in existence.

After missing the playoffs last season in Florence, SC as the Pee Dee Cyclones, Head Coach and General Manager Mark Richards revamped his lineup, building around superstar Allan Sirois and big Geoff Rollins up front. Part of the renovations included a major trade with the Barracudas that saw forward Jason Cassels move north to the Cyclones, in exchange for forward Chris Rebernik.

By comparison, the Barracudas will be riding essentially the same core of players who got hot at the end of last season, and advanced to the SPHL Championship Final, before finally bowing out to the Fayetteville FireAntz. The experience of playing for the Barracudas under the tutelage of Allain, and the desire to take that last step towards a championship has resulted in the Cudas enjoying the return of the majority of their roster. However, that last step will not be easy, as the entire league seems to have gotten stronger, with an improved Cyclones team looking to make their first playoff appearance.

Forward Chris Ferguson will not be in the lineup for the Barracudas, as he serves a suspension handed down last season. Ryan Person is expected to gain the start in net for the Barracudas, with newcomer Tim Haun backing him up.

The Barracudas named veteran forward Kahlil Thomas as their Captain for the 2007-08 season, taking over for Greg LeColst who had led the team for the previous two campaigns. Tyrone Garner resumes his role as Alternate Captain, along with forward Jim Murphy.
