Barons to Extend Protective Netting at Regions Field
March 4, 2016 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - At the suggestion of Major League Baseball's fan safety initiative, the Birmingham Barons will be extending the protective netting behind home plate to the edge of the dugouts at Regions Field prior to the start of the 2016 Southern League Season. The extended netting will seamlessly connect to the existing structure at Regions Field, minimizing the effect on sight lines for fans in the lower seating area and maintaining the aesthetic appeal of seeing a baseball game at Regions Field.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred called for the increase in fan safety this past offseason, and he was immediately echoed by Minor League Baseball President and CEO Pat O' Conner.
"Minor League Baseball clubs strive to offer safe, family-friendly facilities for our fans," O' Conner said. "These recommendations will help ensure the safety of those fans sitting close to the action."
Ensuring minimal influence on the fan experience at Regions Field, the extended portion of the protective netting will connect to the front end of the dugouts. Between-inning dugout-top performances will not be affected, and ample space has been designed near the bottom of the protective screen to ensure fans and players will still be able to interact.
Season ticket holders to the Birmingham Barons in sections 103, 104, and 105 behind the third base dugout and sections 111, 112, and 113 behind the first base dugout have been notified of the fan safety initiative. The city of Birmingham, as part of its agreement with Regions Field, will be handling the cost of the project.
Construction is scheduled for later in March and is estimated to last between one and two days.
