The Cleveland Barons came into this weekend with An opportunity to reclaim third place in the Northern Division. Mission accomplished, as the Barons had a win and a overtime lost to get three points and move into third place.

The Barons opened the weekend on the road Saturday night at the Toledo Icehouse to face the Toledo IceDiggers. The Barons opened the scoring early in the first with Brian Bicek (Downers Grove,IL) scoring his 16th goal of the year with the assists going to Jason Weeks (Seattle, WA) and Carson Strang (Shaker Heights, OH) giving the Barons a 1-0 lead. Cleveland capitalized on a Toledo penalty in the last minute of the first period with defenseman Bob Helminen scoring his 11th goal of the year, giving him the lead for goals by a defenseman. The lone assist went to Vinny Jalaba (Beverly Hills, MI),giving Cleveland a 2-0 after one.

The went up 3-0 in the second period as Jason Weeks scored with assists going to Carson Strang and Brian Bicek. The IceDiggers wouldn't give up as they put two goals past Barons net minder Ian Keserich (Parma, OH) to end the second with a 3-2 lead.

The third period was textbook defensive hockey by the Barons as Keserich madesome great saves to preserve the lead. In the last minute of the third Barons forward Carson Strang sealed the victory with an empty net goal to make the final 4-2. Barons goalie Ian Keserich had 30 save in claiming his 18th victory of the year.

Sunday Jan. 25th vs. USA-17

The Barons came out of the gates against the USA-17 squad Mike Ruberto (Stoney Creek ,ONT) scored his 24th goal on the power play, with the assist going to Mike Wolff (Cicero, IL) giving the Baron a 1-0 lead. The USA squad came back with goal by Chris Cahill to knot the score up at one after one period.

The second period featured a goaltending dual between Cleveland's Ian Keserich and the USA Billy Blasé. Although both teams had chances, there were no shots that crossed the line.

In the third period, the defensive battled continued until 15.57 mark when Barons forward Kurt Kivisto (Brighton, MI) banged home a rebound to give the Barons a 2-1 lead. With 1:20 left in the third USA forward Ryan Stoa scored on a mishap behind the net with Barons goalie Ian Keserich to tie the game up at two at the end of regulation.

In the overtime period, the USA squad was given a two man advantage with 3:30 left and Jack Kemp scored on a one timer to end the game, giving the USA-17 team a 3-2 win.

Barons goalie Ian Keserich had 25 saves in the match.

BARONS NOTES: The Barons next game will be February 1st versus the Springfield Jr.Blues at 3:30PM at the IceLand USA in Strongsville, OH. The February 15th home game originally against the Dayton Gems will be played at the same date and time against the Youngstown PHANTOMS, game time 3:35.
