
Barons sweep Alpena to begin 2005-06 campaign

September 11th, 2005 (Parma, OH)- The Cleveland Barons of the North American Hockey League, began the 2005-06 season with a pair of victories over the Alpena IceDiggers at the Lakefront Lines Arena in Parma, Ohio.
Friday night, the Barons gave new Head Coach John Fritsche his first victory in NAHL with a decisive 6-2 win. The Barons were led by Eric Rex (Fairview, PA) and rookie Bill Hemann (Westlake, OH) with two goals. Defenseman John Kennedy ( Saginaw, MI) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Cleveland rookies Brett Jendra ( Darien, IL), Clark MacLean (Worthington, OH), Chase Porter (Franklin , TN) picked up their first point in the NAHL with an assist. Veterans Nick Kosinski (Marquette, MI), Matt Buckley (Dayton, MN) and goalie Kenny Reiter ( Pittsburgh, PA) had an assist in the win.
Alpena had goals from Todd Rudasill and defenseman Adam Snead.
Cleveland goalie Kenny Reiter earned his first win as a Baron, making 30 saves in the contest.
Saturday night, the Barons were involved in closely contested match, in the end they earned a 3-2 victory in a shootout. Cleveland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period as Ryan Ward (Saline, MI) scored his first goal as a Baron, with the assists going to Clark MacLean, and Joe Greener (Basingstoke, ENG). Alpena answer back with a Todd Rudasill goal toward the end of the period to tie the score at one. In the second, Barons captain Carter Camper (Rocky River, OH) put the home team in the lead 2-1, with the assist going to Aaron Pietila ( Brighton, MI). In the third period, Alpena forward Eric Peterson tied the score at two. After a five minute overtime with no scoring, the game went to a shootout where the Barons prevailed 2-1 with Ryan Ward getting the game winner.
Cleveland goalie Kenny Reiter was solid, turning in a 30 saves effort in the win.
Barons Head Coach John Fritsche stated; " We are very happy with the start to our season, but we have a lot of room to grow and improve as a team." The Barons will continue their seven game home stand, with the expansion Traverse City North Stars. Game times on Friday Sept.16th and Saturday Sept. 17th are 7:30PM and Sunday Sept. 18th 3:30PM at the Lakefront Lines Arena in Parma, OH.
