Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Pedro Lopez's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Birmingham Barons to 5-2 victory over the Tennessee Smokies Monday night, June 19th, in Southern League action at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
With the game tied at two apiece entering the bottom of the seventh, the Barons' Micah Schurstein drew a leadoff walk from Tennessee reliever Dustin Glant. Following a sacrifice bunt, Glant issued another walk to Gustavo Molina to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Lopez delivered his first home run this season as a Baron. Birmingham starter Ryan Rodriguez (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) went seven innings, allowing just two runs, to improve his record to 4-6. Lopez finished the game with four RBI while Chris Getz went 1-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Ehren Wassermann tossed a scoreless ninth to record his 12th save of the season.
Agustin Murillo went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Smokies as starter Garrett Mock (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) did not figure into the decision. Glant (0.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K; now 2-4) suffered the loss for Tennessee (0-1).
The Barons (1-0) will continue their five-game series against Tennessee on Tuesday, June 20th, at 7:05 p.m. at the Hoover Met. RHP Steven Jackson (2-5, 2.84 ERA) is listed as the probable starter for the Smokies, while LHP Ray Liotta (2-6, 3.44 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Birmingham.
