Mobile, AL - Charles Brewer and a pair of relievers allowed one earned run as the Mobile BayBears (3-2) mauled the Birmingham Barons (2-3), 7-1, in Game Five of Southern League's Southern Divisional Series in front of 1,052 fans Monday night at Mobile's Hank Aaron Stadium.
Mobile seized a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Adam Eaton was hit by a pitch and reached second on A.J. Pollock's walk. Ryan Wheeler smashed a two-run, bases clearing double to center field that plated Eaton and Pollock. A RBI double by Taylor Harbin brought in Wheeler for the frame's final run.
The Barons cut the deficit to two in the top of the second inning after the bases were loaded when Jon Gilmore walked, Jose Martinez singled and Jake Oester walked. With the sacks packed, Alden Carrithers coaxed a walk that forced home Gilmore and made the score, 3-1.
Marc Krauss was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the second inning and sprinted around the bases on David Kraczrowski's RBI double to center field, 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the BayBears opened a 7-1 when Karaczowski lined a leadoff single up the middle and advanced to second base on Ollie Linton's sacrifice bunt. Eaton followed with a walk for Jacob Elmore, who smashed a two-run triple to the center-field wall. Wheeler added a RBI double to right field that delivered Elmore for the inning's third run.
Charles Brewer (1-0) earned the victory for the BayBears when the right-hander tossed 6.0 IP with one earned run on 3 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Justin Edwards (0-1) suffered the defeat for the Barons as the southpaw was charged with six earned runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout in 4.1 IP.
