Barons grab three points over rival Phantoms

The Cleveland Barons traveled to Columbus , OH on Saturday to face their instate rival the Youngstown Phantoms at Value City Arena on the campus of The Ohio State University.

The Barons jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first period as John Goebel (Parma, OH) scored his 5th goal of the year shorthanded with the assist going to Nick Biondo (Parma, OH) and Jacob Cepis (Parma, OH) his 8th goal of the season with the assists going to John Goebel and J.C. Velasquez (Clarkston, MI), The second period featured two goals by each team. Pat Schafer (Hilliard, OH ) scored both goals, his 3rd and 4th in front of his home town fans, with Nick Kosinski (Marquette, MI) picking up the lone assist on both goals giving the Barons a 4-3 lead after two periods. In the third period the Phantoms would tie the scored at four to send the game into overtime where Phantoms forward Rob Rassey would end the game with 5-4 victory for Youngstown. Barons goalie Chris Carlson Plainfield, IL), making his first start from an injury had 36 saves in the game.

The return match was 24 hours later, at the IceLand USA Arena in Strongsville, OH. The Barons playing in front of their home fan for the first time in over three weeks. The home team would not disappoint as they came out flying in the first period scoring twice. Michael Cox (Fraser, MI) scored his first goal as a Baron with the assist going to Michael Kennedy (Lyons, IL) and J.C. Velasquez. John Goebel scored his second shorthanded of the weekend and 6th goal of the year with Nick Biondo picking up the lone assist giving the Barons a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Barons picked up where they left off in the first scoring three more goals in the period. John Goebel scored his second of the night and 7th of the year with Nick Biondo and Jake Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) picking up the assists. After a Youngstown goal by Anthony Ciraulo, Barons forward Pat Schafer scored on the power play , his 5th of the season , with Jake Coyle picking up the assist. Barons forward Nick Biondo, ended the period with a powerplay goal, his 8th of the year, with Jake Coyle and Pat Schafer get the assists, giving the Barons a 5-1 lead after two. The third period featured a goal by Cleveland forward Jacob Cepis, his 9th of the year with Steve Leppo (McKeesport, PA) and J.C. Velasquez picking up the assists leading to a Barons victory 6-1. Barons goalie Blake MacNicol ( Milan, OH) picked up his 5th win of the year (5-4-1) with a 31 saves performance

NEW BARONS ARRIVE TO CLEVELAND

The Cleveland Barons made some moves over the past week to sure up the squad. Arriving to the Barons are forward J.C. Velasquez, forward from Clarkston, MI. Velasquez was the second leading scorer on the Central Texas Marshals team with 9 pts. He has had an immediate impact with a 3 point weekend. Forward Michael Cox, forward from Fraser, MI comes in from the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). Defenseman Steve Leppo (McKeesport,PA) comes in from Toledo IceDiggers.

BARONS NOTES: The Barons continue their 4 game home streak with two games this weekend against their in-state rivals. The Toledo IceDiggers will be the opponent on Friday night game time 7:05PM and the Youngstown Phantoms will return Saturday night at 7:05PM.
