
Barons come up one goal short on weekend games

On Friday, October 8th the Cleveland Barons traveled to the Toledo Ice House to face the Toledo IceDiggers. Blake MacNicol (Milan, OH) started the game in goal for the Barons, who were trying even the season series at two games. After a scoreless first period, the IceDiggers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 1:22 mark on a a Paul Scalici goal. The Barons answered back two minutes later when Nick Biondo (Parma, OH) scored his 2nd goal of the year on the power play, tying the score at one. The lone assist went to defenseman Jim Burichin (Strongsville, OH). The IceDiggers would score twice more in the period with goals from Adam Thomas an Jim Kozlowski to give Toledo a 3-1 lead after two periods. In the third period, Barons forward Carter Camper (Rocky River, OH) scored his first junior A goal on the power play to cut the deficit to 3-2. The lone assist again went to defenseman Jim Burichin. The Barons had many chances toward the end of the game , but were denied by the IceDiggers making the final 3-2. Barons goalie Blake MacNicol had 22 save in the game.
On Saturday, October 9th, the Barons traveled for a home game to Bowling Green, OH and the BGSU Arena, to face the Soo Kewadin Indians. The Indians were trying to avenge a opening weekend sweep by the Barons at the Big Bear Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. The first period featured the Indians scoring the only goal of the period at the 18:18 mark with a Joe Beaudry tally. The Barons came out in the second period by tying the score, with a goal by Jason Weeks (Seattle, WA), his 4th of the year, the assists going to Nick Biondo and John Goebel (Parma, OH). The Indians would strike back in the middle of the period with goals by Drew Satterley and Joe Beaudry giving the Soo a 3-1 lead. Nick Biondo scored his 3rd goal of the year, on the power play, at the end of the second period, the assists going to Jim Burichin and Carter Camper, making the score 3-2. The Barons came out flying in the third period, but missed opportunities, led to no scoring in the period making the final 3-2 for the Soo Kewadin Indians. Barons goaltender Chris Carlson (Plainfield, IL) made 22 saves and played superb, keeping the Barons in the game.
BARONS TO PLAY AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
The Cleveland Barons will travel to Columbus,OH to play the Youngstown Phantoms on Saturday, November 13th at 1:30PM. The home game will be played at the 22,000 seat Value City Arena at Schottenstein Center on The Ohio State University campus. This is a part of a hockey double header, as The Ohio State University Buckeyes will face the Northern Michigan Wildcats in CCHA action. This game was originally supposed toi be played at the IceLand USA Arena in Strongsville, OH , but had to moved due to scheduling difficulties.
BARONS NOTES
The Barons will play one game this weekend against the USA-18 squad in Ann Arbor, MI on Sunday, October 17th at 3:30 PM at the Ann Arbor Cube. The schedule has been set for the Barons for the Minnesota Showcase (October20-23). The Barons will face the Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL)(10-20, 10:00 AM EST), Fairbanks Ice dogs (10-21, 2:30 PM), Texarkana Bandits (10-22, 5:30PM) and Walpole Stars (EJHL) (10-23, 9:30 AM).
