Barnstormers Bash Way To Fourth Straight
Lancaster's high-powered offense blasted its way to nine runs in the top of the second Wednesday evening en route to a 14-5 victory over the Somerset Patriots at TD Bank Park.
The win was Lancaster's fourth straight and 75th of the season, tying the club record set by the 2006 Atlantic League champions. This year's edition reached the 75-win mark in 10 fewer games.
Fehlandt Lentini opened the second off Chase Wright (4-2) with a long ground rule double that jumped the wall in left center field. The Patriots nabbed Lentini in a rundown on Ryan Harvey's grounder to short, but Lentini avoided a tag long enough for Harvey to reach second. Travis Denker ripped a double into the left center gap to plate the game's first run. Kody Kirkland followed with a base hit to left but ran into an out after Denker was held at third, and the throw in from Ryan Kiniry was cut off. That proved only to be a minor detour in the inning.
Francisco Hernandez grounded a single into left to score Denker and went to third on a double to right center by Bridger Hunt. Adam Godwin picked up a walk to load the bases. Gilberto Mejia fought off several pitches before lining an RBI single into right for a 3-0 lead. Blake Gailen also defended the plate until nailing a three-run double over the head of center fielder Joe Holden. Lentini dumped an RBI single into shallow left center for a 7-0 edge, and Harvey capped the inning with a line drive homer to right, his second of the game.
J.D. Durbin (11-9) allowed a three-run homer to Jesse Hoorelbeke in the fourth inning and survived big threats in the fifth and seventh innings to earn the win. He finished the night having yielded seven hits and three runs while walking four and striking out four in his seven innings of work.
Lentini and Gailen added RBI singles over the rest of the game, while Harvey knocked in one more with a screaming double to left. The Barnstormers other two runs crossed the plate on sac flies.
The Barnstormers wrap up the four-game series with the Patriots Thursday evening. Mark Brackman (7-8) will take the mound against lefty Roy Merritt (8-7). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
