
Bankston Named Player of the Month

(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 5, 2011) - The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball today announced that Bluefish first baseman Wes Bankston has been named July player of the month.
"We are thrilled to hear that Wes has received this honor," says Bluefish general manager Bob Goughan. "We look forward to Wes continuing his great performance on the field as we make a push for the postseason."
Bankston appeared in 25 games for the Bluefish in July, recording 32 RBI and scoring 15 runs over the course of 100 at-bats. The slugger also batted .340 with a remarkable .740 slugging percentage. Defensively, he was perfect, recording no errors throughout the entire month.
The 2011 All-Star is currently in the top-15 in the Atlantic League in batting average at .298 and third in doubles (24), second in total bases (160), second in extra base hits (42), fifth in RBI (58), first in slugging percentage (.590), and second in home runs (18).
2011 marks Wes's first season in the Atlantic League and 10th season of professional baseball. Last year, the slugger split time between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma City of the Texas Rangers organization. In 246 combined at-bats, he batted .228 with 19 doubles, five home runs and 32 RBI.
The Texas-native has made one stop at the Major League level as a member of the Oakland Athletics in 2008. In 17 games, he recorded 12 hits, including one home run in 59 at-bats. The 27-year-old posted his best season as a professional in 2004 with Charleston (A, Rays) of the South Atlantic League. The Rays 4th round pick of the 2002 amateur draft batted .289 and posted careers-highs with 23 home runs, 30 doubles, 82 runs scored and 101 RBI. In 881 career minor league games coming into this season, Bankston has batted .273, connected on 134 homers and drove in 576 runs.
