Bank of America Pitcher-Player of the Week Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards for the week ending August 24th: Bowie Baysox catcher/designated hitter Steve Torrealba has been named the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending August 24th. Torrealba, who is a native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, had an outstanding week for the Baysox, hitting .409 (9-for-22) with one double, two homers, six RBI, five runs scored, one walk and a .727 slugging percentage over five games. The 6'0", 220 lb. slugger had at least one hit in all five games he played in during the week, including going 3-for-4 with two home runs, one double, three RBI and three runs scored in an 8-2 win at Reading on Wednesday night. The 30-year old has played in 33 games with the Baysox since joining the team in June and is hitting .292 (31-for-106) with seven doubles, eight homers and 25 RBI. Steve, who appeared in 15 games in the Major Leagues with the Atlanta Braves during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a minor league free agent on June 11, 2008.

Victor Zambrano, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 24th. The 6'0", 205 lb. hurler made a pair of starts for the Thunder last week and had a record of 2-0 with 11 strikeouts and a 0.75 ERA in 12.0 innings pitched. Zambrano, who is a native of Los Teques, Venezuela, made his first start of the week last Monday night at Reading and gave up four hits and one walk while striking out five batters in five shutout innings of work to earn the win. The 33-year old also faced Reading in his second appearance of the week, surrendering one run on three hits and one walk while recording six strikeouts over seven innings to pick up the victory at Waterfront Park. Victor, who has a career record of 45-44 with a 4.64 ERA in 187 Major League appearances during parts of seven seasons with Tampa Bay, New York (NL), Toronto and Baltimore , was signed by the New York Yankees as a minor league free agent on July 31, 2008.
