Raleigh Rebels News Release
RALEIGH NC - The Raleigh Rebels (3-1) came into Mondays night's game against the Richmond Bandits (3-1) in the driver's seat of the Southern Division. They left the Richmond Coliseum in the trunk. The Rebel's were annihilated last night in every phase of the game 56-28, dropping them into a 4-way tie for first place.
Rebel Quarterback Barry Marrow (6', 185, Merced College) got his first start of the season in place of the injured starter David Malino. It wasn't make much of a debut for Marrow however as he spent most of the evening running for his life. Raleigh's offense could not find any answers for the Richmond pass rush as the Bandit's sacked Marrow 6 times and forced two more interceptions. Despite the Rebel defense giving up just 217 yards to the Bandits they couldn't shut Richmond down when it mattered as Bandit quarterback Robbie Jenkins threw for 7 touchdowns, four to receiver Brian Still and three to Redd Thompson. The Bandit's also converted all three of their 4th down attempts, returned a fumble for a touchdown and recorded a safety in route to winning the first "Capital Bowl" between the two teams and retaining the Capital City Trophy.
"The past two weeks have been hell for this team and this organization. I think it finally caught up to us tonight. You can only bend so long before something breaks" said head coach Steven G. Folmar. Folmar's team looked out of sync all-night and eventually Rebel frustrations showed both on the field and on the bench. "We have to take a good hard look at where we are and where we need to be. It is not an ideal situation so we have to find someway to make corrections with what we have."
Marrow finished the evening 11 of 31 for 144 yards, 3 touchdowns and the two interceptions. Corey Peterson led Rebel receivers with 5 catches for 52 yards and a touchdown, and Lavel Bailey caught two passes for 59 yards, both for touchdowns. The Rebel's must now make the trip to Chattahoochee Valley (3-1) for the rematch with the Vipers. The Rebels took the first meeting in Week 3, 53-44.
