Akron Racers News Release
Akron, OH- June 19, 2015 - The Akron Racers fell to the Chicago Bandits in the second game of a doubleheader, 11-3.
A quick first inning led to the Racers sending the Bandits back to their dugout with no runs or hits. When the Racers stepped up to bat, Jill Barrett (University of Tulsa) led off by sneaking a grounder in between the right side of the infield. Taylor Schlopy (Georgia) crushed her third homerun of the season, second of the day, to left field.
The Bandits got on the board in the second inning when Vicky Galasso singled down the left field line, driving in Patton, who led off the inning with a single.
With the bases loaded and their sixth batter up, the Bandits rallied during the top of the third and took away one run and three hits tying up the score. The Racers plateaued during the bottom of the third. Schlopy nailed another ball towards centerfield, sprinting to second base making it by a hair, earning the only hit of the inning.
The top of the fourth was a short one for the Bandits with no runs and two hits. Kelley Montalvo (University of Alabama) gave the bottom of the fourth a great start by nailing her second home run for the day straight over the center field fence.
"I was really just hoping it was a double, but seeing it go over the fence was a great feeling," Montalvo said.
The fifth inning saw a switch in the pitchers for the Racers. Laura Winter (Notre Dame) came in to fill in for Aimee Creger (Tulsa). The Bandits tied up the game at 3 when Amber Patton smoked a single to left center, driving in pinch runner Sammy Marshall.
Brittany Cervantes gave the Bandits the lead in the top of the sixth inning when she launched a homerun to right center. The Racers looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, but failed to get a runner on base.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bandits scored sixth runs, putting the game out of reach for the Racers. The Racers came up in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't manage to get anyone on base.
"It's a tough loss." Montalvo said, "But we need to stick together and reduce our errors."
Michelle Gascoigne got the win for the Bandits, improving her record to 2-0 on the year. Laura Winter took the loss for the Racers, dropping her record to 1-2.
