Bandits Bring Back Veteran Guard Jabs Newby from 2020 Summer Series Finals Roster
July 15, 2022 - Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL)
Vancouver Bandits News Release
LANGLEY, B.C. - The Fraser Valley Bandits announced Friday that the club has signed guard Jabs Newby for his second season with the Bandits.
The 6-foot-2 native of Brampton, Ont. previously suited up for the Bandits at the 2020 Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Summer Series where he brought tenacious defence and leadership to the club's guard corps. Fraser Valley advanced to the championship game where the team ultimately fell to the Edmonton Stingers.
Since representing BC's professional basketball team, Newby has taken his talents overseas where he is a veteran of the European professional basketball circuit. In 2020-21, he enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career, averaging 29.9 minutes, 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists for Gijon in Spain.
In 2021-22, Newby continued his impressive track record in Spain, playing for Cartagena. Five out of his eight seasons as a professional athlete have been spent competing in some of Europe's top leagues in Spain.
Over the past year, Newby has been making a name for himself on the FIBA 3x3 circuit. The crafty guard played for Team Jamaica at the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2021 where his team lost against the United States in the quarterfinals.
Newby played post-secondary basketball for two seasons at Eastern Kentucky where he averaged 11.8 minutes per game before transferring to Gannon University. Newby's game continued to develop at Gannon as over two seasons with the Golden Knights he averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game on 45.6 and 35.7 per cent shooting from field goal and three-point range, respectively.
Newby will make his 2022 Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) debut this evening when Fraser Valley takes on the Guelph Nighthawks at Langley Events Centre. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. PT.
