Baltimore Mariners Pick-Up Pick-Off Leader Letren

BALTIMORE, MD (November 16, 2009) - Andre' Letren, who set a Baltimore Mariners and American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) single-game record with five interceptions, and who also has professional playing experience in Canada and Italy, has been re-signed by the indoor football team, which calls 1st Mariner Arena home.

"Andre came in during the latter half of the season and did an outstanding job filling in for us when we had injuries in the secondary. I look for Andre' to be very competitive in earning a starting position in 2010," said Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson.

Despite lettering for three seasons in football at Greenbelt, Maryland's Roosevelt High School, most of Letren's early sports' success was in track and field. After winning multiple state championships for the Raiders, the Capital Heights, Maryland resident was part of several relay teams, which placed at the Championship of America National Carnival Penn Relays, the National Indoor Track and Field Championships, and the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics.

Following a brief stint with the Troy State University Trojans football team and his graduation from the university in 2003, Letren turned his attention back to football. Signed as a free agent by the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in May, 2004, Letren spent time on their practice squad as a defensive back. In 2005 he split time between the Richmond Bandits of the Atlantic Indoor Football League (AIFL) and across the Atlantic with Roma Glatiatori (Rome Gladiators) of NFL Italy. In 2006 he again split time between two teams playing for the Chattahoochee Valley Vipers of the AIFL and the Tennessee Valley Vipers of the Arena Football League 2 (af2). In just four games with Tennessee Valley he totaled 22 tackles. He also was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game in the Valley Vipers 55-40 win over the Birmingham Steeldogs after compiling a game-high 11 tackles, one interception, and five passes broken up.

After a three-year hiatus from professional football Letren immediately made his presence felt with the Mariners in 2009. In his first game with Baltimore, a 52-32 win over the Columbus Lions; he led the team with 3.5 tackles and broke up two passes. His crowning achievement with the Mariners was in the team's 70-22 win over the D.C. Armor in the regular season finale. Letren established a Mariners and AIFA league record with five interceptions. He also returned two of the takeaways for touchdowns. Seeing action in five of the team's final six games, Letren totaled 19 tackles (15 solo and 8 assisted), five interceptions, five passes broken up, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery, as the Mariners finished their season on a 5-1 tear to clinch the team's first playoff berth in franchise history.
