Baltimore Mariners Defense Named Player of the Week

March 24, 2010 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Baltimore Mariners News Release

BALTIMORE, MD (March 24, 2010) - Sometimes you can't just pick one. After witnessing the first shutout in American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) history by the Baltimore Mariners in their 59-0 win over the Fayetteville Guard, the voters for the VidSwap.com AIFA Defensive Player of the Week, could not bestow this weekly honor on just one Mariner, but instead selected the whole defensive unit for this award.

The band of Mariners marauders, which included defensive ends Melik Brown and Fearon Wright, nose tackle Daniel Orlebar, linebackers Brian Bradford and Adam Goloboski, and defensive backs Richard Johnson, Desmond Maul, Jermaine Thaxton, and Armar Watson, notched the first shutout in the four-year history of the AIFA, by rattling the Fayetteville offense with six sacks, grabbing seven turnovers and holding the Guard to a mere 69 yards of total offense. Bradford (two interceptions), Johnson (two interceptions and a fumble recovery), Thaxton (fumble recovery) and Watson (interception) all collected takeaways and added to the Mariners league leading 15 takeaways and +12 turnover margin. The large number of turnovers could be attributed to the constant pressure provided by the front five as Brown (1.5), Goloboski (2.5) and Wright (two) all captured sacks.

The Mariners notched the unheard of shutout, in a league where teams are currently averaging 42 point per game, by holding Fayetteville to just 21 yards rushing, 48 yards passing, and an average of just 1.7 yards per play. Baltimore has now outscored its opponents 182-71 on the way to a perfect 3-0 start; an average margin of victory of 37 points.

Just three weeks into the season Baltimore has already garnered four players of the week honors as Brown won defensive honors in week one, Watson won the week two defensive award, and quarterback E.J. Nemeth was named the top offensive player of the week in week two.
