Baltimore Mariners Add Maul to Defensive Attack

BALTIMORE, MD (February 16, 2010) - The Baltimore Mariners continued to stock their roster as training camp approaches by announcing the signing of Defensive Back Desmond Maul, a veteran of seven indoor and arena football seasons. The Mariners, who are members of the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) kick off their season March 6th at the Harrisburg Stampede and their home opener is set for March 14th at 4:00 PM against the New Jersey Revolution at 1st Mariner Arena.

Head Coach Chris Simpson looks forward to seeing what Maul can add to the Mariners, who finished the 2009 season at 9-5 and earned the team's first playoff berth in the franchise's history. "Desmond is another talented and experienced defensive back we've added to our secondary. Can't wait to see how this talent translates to the football field."

Following a decorated prep career at Spring-Ford Senior High School of Royersford, Pennsylvania and two All-Conference seasons at State University of New York at Canton (SUNY Canton) Maul made a dramatic transition from east coast high school and college ball to professional football in Hawaii by signing with the Hawaiian Islanders of the Arena Football League 2 (af2). The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native played three seasons (2002-2004) for the arena football team. One of Maul's finest performances, in a 70-42 win by the Islanders over the Central Valley Coyotes, earned him ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors with 3.5 tackles, four pass breaks-up, and a 36-yard interception return score, the longest in franchise history. The 5'10", 190 pound defensive back also spent time on the practice squad of the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football League (AFL) in 2004.

Maul continued his arena football career, but closer to home, by playing for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Pioneers of the af2 in 2005 and with the Reading Express of the AIFA in 2006. In 2007 Maul played for the Huntington Heroes of the AIFA and ranked third on the team in tackles (21) and interceptions (3) despite playing only seven games. In 2008 he suited up for the Lehigh Valley Outlawz of the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL).

Following a one-year hiatus, Maul now joins a Baltimore Mariners defense which led the AIFA in interceptions with 42 and ranked second in the league with 52 takeaways.
