Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Nuts took advantage of some key Bakersfield miscues in a pivotal 5th inning, and cruised to a 7-3 win in the finale of a 4-game set at John Thurman Field.

In the aftermath of last night's 13-inning marathon heartbreaker, the Blaze actually took the early lead in this one, plating a run on a 2-out triple-single rally in the 3rd. But the Nuts would strike right back - David Christensen took a Josh Ravin (L, 2-8) fastball over the wall in rightcenter for his 3rd homer of the year to the tie game at 1, and that was the last the Blaze would sniff of this one.

In the 5th, a hit batter and a walk put the first 2 men aboard before an errant pickoff throw moved them into scoring position. Then, with the infield in, Delta Cleary Jr. singled to left to score a run, and a missed cutoff allowed Cleary to move to 2nd. A passed ball brought in a run, and a sacrifice fly brought in another, and the Nuts led 4-1 on a largely unearned rally. The Blaze managed to cut the deficit to 4-2 with a single and a double in the 7th off Modesto starter Edwar Cabrera (W, 3-0), but Cabrera finished the 7th with some help from a diving catch behind him, and struck out 9 in a strong effort.

The Nuts got 3 more in their half of the 7th to put the game away on 3 straight 2-out singles, and though Bakersfield would score 1 cosmetic run in the 9th, this game was largely controlled by the Nuts.

With the loss, the Blaze drop 1 game behind Modesto in the race for the Wild Card spot, and though Bakersfield won the season series with Modesto 11 games to 10, Modesto took the final 3 meetings.

The Blaze now head home to take on Lancaster and Lake Elsinore in a 7-game homestand. All 7 games will be available on the internet live at BakersfieldBlaze.com, and you can still get tickets to come check out an awesome
