HEAD COACHES

Bakersfield Blitz Head Coach James Fuller begins his second season in the af2, bringing 6 years of coaching experience, and an admirable track record of success. Named as the 1st head coach in franchise history on December 7, 2001, Coach Fuller has spent the off-season infusing the Blitz organization and the Bakersfield area with eager anticipation for the start of the 2003 season. Fuller posted a 9-8 record last season capturing a West division title and a playoff berth in the inaugural season of the franchise.

Prior to joining the Blitz, Fuller spent two seasons in Oklahoma with the Wranglers of the Arena Football League, during which he led the Wranglers to the No.1 league rankings in total defense and pass defense in 2000.

Fuller began his coaching career in Portland with the Forest Dragons (1998-2000) of the Arena Football League after serving one year as a defensive specialist. During the 1998 season he tallied 14 tackles with 10.5 of them coming unassisted.

Fuller played cornerback at Portland State University, under head coach Pokey Allen from 1990-1992 earning All-American honors each year. As a two-time All Western Conference selection, Fuller led the Vikings in solo tackles, interceptions, and fumbles caused and recovered.

The following year the San Diego Chargers selected Fuller in the 8th round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He played cornerback with the Chargers until his release in 1994, after which he would attend training camp with the New Orleans Saints. While at camp, Fuller injured his knee causing his release. He was then allocated to the Scottish Claymores of the World League (NFL Europe). While with the Claymores, Fuller earned a World Bowl championship in 1996. Fuller ended his career with time spent in Philadelphia with the Eagles.

Cree Morris enters his second season as the Riptide's Head Coach and Director of Football Operations. Last season, he coached the team to a 7-9 regular season record through an injury-plagued season. Despite that he became the first coach in league history to lead a team with a losing record to a playoff win when the Riptide beat division champion Bakersfield 40-27.

Morris became the first af2 expansion head coach to beat the eventual ArenaCup champions in the same season the team won the title when the Riptide overcame a 21-0 deficit to win 28-21 over Peoria. In the post-season, the Riptide shutout the Pirates for more than three quarters, just as they did in the regular season before Peoria won in the end. Overall, the Riptide shutout Peoria for an af2-record 75 minutes and 29 seconds between scores.

Under his guidance, other af2 single-game and season records were broken. In his first game April 6 vs. Bakersfield, Morris coached the longest game in league history and saw the single-game all-purpose yardage mark completely shattered by Marty Graham (400 yards). Later in the season, Rico Curtis broke the single-season tackle record with 121.0 stops.

Morris, a former Orange Glen High and San Diego State quarterback also has playing experience with the NFL, Arena Football League and the World League, tutored Kane Claunch last year to 63 TDs, over 3,000 yards and a passer rating of 99.8. This great season resulted in Claunch moving up to the AFL's Colorado Crush this season.

Morris led Orange Glen to a 12-1 record his senior year in 1988, finishing second in the state in passing with over 3,000 yards and 30 TDs. He was named Palomar League Offensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-CIF and Honorable Mention All-State.

He spent three years at San Diego State, where he had the rare distinction of throwing Darnay Scott his first collegiate touchdown and handing Marshall Faulk his first collegiate carry in the same game – a 49-13 win over Cal State Long Beach on 9/8/1991.

In 1992, Morris transferred to Division II St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, where he earned a B.A. in Health, Fitness and Recreation with an emphasis on teaching. In two seasons with the Gaels, he threw for 3,451 yards and 24 TDs, as well as six rushing scores. He is listed 16 times in the school's all-time record books after leading them to consecutive winning seasons in just 15 starts.

He participated in the training camp of the Los Angeles Raiders in 1994. In April of 1995, Morris signed with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League, however, the St. Louis Rams invited him to their training camp. In 1996, Morris spent a season in the World League of American Football with the London Monarchs.

The following year, Morris began his two-year Arena career spending a year and half with the Arena League's San Jose SaberCats (1997-98) and finishing his career with the Iowa Barnstormers (1998).

Following his playing career, Morris focused on bringing Arena Football to the San Diego area. He met up with Gil Saidy in July of 1998 and the two began a four-year journey that resulted in the Riptide.

He has served as an assistant coach at John Swett High in the Bay Area (1994), his alma mater Orange Glen (1997-98) and Castle Park High (2000-01).

He's married to Stephanie, who he had been dating since they were 12. They have two sons Noah Trey (12/8/2001) and Jeremy Lane (2/12/2003) and reside in Escondido.

The Bakersfield Blitz open the 2003 season with a number of new faces, both on the coaching staff and on the roster. Head Coach James fuller retained Fullback/Linebacker Coach Steven Folmar, and Offensive/Defensive Assistant Rick Van Horne from last season, and he filled out his staff with a proven AFL veteran in Richard Britt as well as young talent in Paul Press.

After finishing 9-8 and capturing the West Division Title last year, the Blitz look for far greater success under the leadership of James Fuller and defensive coordinator Richard Britt. The team builds the 2003 squad around a solid core of developing stars, including: QB Chad Elliot, OL/DL Oscar Grajeda, DS J'Sharlon Jones and WR/DB Ryan Sloth.

After playing each of his quarterbacks throughout training camp with significant success, Coach Fuller named 2nd year quarterback Chad Elliot as the starter to open the regular season. Former Bakersfield College quarterback Jeff Dover will back up Elliot. Ryan Sloth, fellow Iowa State alum Gerrick Bivins, and Teddy Wilson lead the receiving corps, each looking for a breakout season. They also hope to help the Blitz post the yards and points that Coach Fuller is designing for them. Another breakout season may come from third-year af2 veteran Eric Mahanke, who has given the Blitz a stellar performance throughout training camp. Veteran Nate Munson and feisty prospect Glenn Gates round out the receivers.

Fullback/linebacker Julian Yearwood returns to lead the offense in the running game after setting the standard for future Blitz backs last season. He posted a team high 145 yards on 48 carries last season. Veteran running back Nathan Buergey and former Riptide fullback Melvin Blue look to back up Yearwood in the running game.

Guards Ricky Leung-Wai, Phil Blackmon and center Kenney Williamson anchor the offensive line, and are easily considered among the most dominating line in the league. Injuries kept out Blackmon and Williamson last season, which allowed rookie Oscar Grajeda to shine. Free agents Chris Smith and Ahmad Bhatti come to the Blitz hoping to solidify the interior of the line that helped Julian Yearwood with his 2002 season.

Veterans J'Sharlon Jones, Julian Yearwood and York Frierson lead the Blitz defense. The Blitz look to veteran leadership to shut down opposing offenses.

SNAPSHOT: SAN DIEGO RIPTIDE

The San Diego Riptide begins a new season opening up against the Bakersfield Blitz again. Led by second-year Head Coach Cree Morris, the Riptide look to build on an 8-10 finish in 2002. With the emergence of several key players including 2002 af2 leading tackler Rico Curtis, the Riptide hope to become a force in the National Conference West Division.

Third-year quarterback Kane Claunch, who had his best pro season in 2002, passing for 3,297 yards and 63 touchdowns, leads the San Diego offense. Claunch paired with wide receiver Marty Graham, who led the riptide in yards per catch with 16.8. In addition to Graham, the Riptide receiving corps features Eddie Miller, Jerry Garrett, Dwight Carter, Jermaine Hanspard, and Altie Parker. The Backfield will have the same look as last season with fullback Brian Berg taking care of the rushing responsibilities. Berg is joined by Rico Curtis and Trey Merkens. The tight end position is held by third-year veteran Ryan Cuthbert, and veteran Brad Greetis. The offensive line returns two starters from 2002, anchored by 6-1, 325-pound Trevor Misipeka. The rest of the offensive line includes Zach LaMonda, Mac Tuiaea, and free agent Henry Stephens who spent the 2002 season with the Tulsa Talons.

The San Diego defense returns a solid group of veterans for the 2003 season. Marty Graham and Brian Berg who were each key in the Riptide defense last season heads up the linebacking corps. The secondary consists of Kenny Haslip, Jerry Garrett, and new acquisition Qunicy Lejay. An aggressive front line should prove to be a strong force up front for San Diego this season.

BLITZ / RIPTIDE: CONNECTIONS

This weekend's visit from the National Conference West opponent San Diego Riptide will bring together a number of and players that have shared the sidelines in the past.

Blitz offensive specialist Corey McCoy, and defensive specialist J'Sharlon Jones, along with Riptide wide receiver/defensive back Altie Parker all played together at Colorado State University.

THE LAST TIME: BAKERSFIELD VS. SAN DIEGO

BAKERSFIELD 35, SAN DIEGO 49 – MAY 3, 2003 – CENTENNIAL GARDEN

With starting quarterback Chad Elliott unable to suit up for tonight's contest, the reigns were handed over to rookie quarterback Jeff Dover. Dover came out firing in the first quarter. It took him only three plays and 2:12 to score his first career touchdown. The second half though was a different story, with the Blitz drowning in a tidal wave of Riptide completions by game MVP quarterback Kane Claunch.

The first half was penalty-ridden for the Blitz. On the Riptide's first possession an encroachment on the defense brought the Riptide from 3rd-and-6 to go at the San Diego 11 yard line – to first and ten at the 16. A 5-yard rush by Claunch followed by a 29-yard completion to Eddie Miller tied the game at 7.

During Bakersfield's next possession two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties cost the Blitz 20 yards. Forced to kick a field goal, the missed kick was returned by San Diego's Marty Graham 52 yards for the touchdown, putting the Riptide up 14-7.

On San Diego's next possession, Claunch would complete a pass from their 20-yard line to Trey Merkens for 6-yards, and then followed it up with a 17-yard rush for the first down. Claunch connected to Jesus Reyes for a 7-yard pass and the touchdown, putting San Diego up by seven. Dover and the Blitz would respond, by completing three consecutive passes for 22 yards, he then pursued the touchdown by giving the ball to York Frierson for a 7-yard rush. Julian Yearwood would finish the job with a haul in from San Diego's 2-yard line, tying the game at 21. San Diego would score once more before the half putting the Riptide up a touchdown going into the half.

The Riptide would receive the kick, with Reyes returning the ball 21 yards to the San Diego 20. Claunch then completed three consecutive passes of his own for 26 yards to bring the Riptide to the Bakersfield 4-yard line. After a one-yard rush by Rico Curtis, Claunch chucked the ball three more yards pushing the Riptide ahead, 35-21.

On their next possession, Dover failed in the connection department. Luckily for the Blitz, the Riptide were charged with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on fourth down with six yards to go on the Bakersfield nine. Thanks to the penalty, Bakersfield was granted ten yards on top of the first down, keeping the Blitz in the game. Still, the offense failed to convert on third down, forcing a 51-yard field goal attempt by kicker Jeff Baker. The kick missed, and San Diego took over on possession.

Once again, Bakersfield began to feel the pain of the penalties after they had held the Riptide to 3rd-and-14 at their own 15-yard line, but were forced to give up a first down thanks to an offsides penalty on the defense, giving San Diego four more chances to get ahead. As the fourth quarter began, Claunch threw a pass, which was intercepted by Blitz linebacker Julian Yearwood. Bakersfield gladly accepted the given opportunity and Dover scored with one play with a 33-yard pass to wide receiver Ryan Sloth for the touchdown.

But, the Blitz defense couldn't hold the Riptide's wave of charges on their next possession, with Claunch ending the scoring series with a pass to Curits Rico for the touchdown with 7:51 remaining in the last quarter.

Bakersfield watched their last opportunity to score drown when Dover was picked off with 2:20 seconds left in the game. The interception was returned by San Diego's Brian Berg for 48 yards to the Blitz end zone and 7 more points, making the score 49-35 with the Riptide leading. Dover, though, quick to compensate for the interception, threw one pass to Eric Mahanke for 36 yards and a touchdown, although the Blitz still remained down by two touchdowns and only 49-seconds remained on the clock.

The team would attempt an onside kick but the Riptide quickly fell on the ball and proceeded to run out the clock on their next set of offensive plays.

Bakersfield's Julian Yearwood recorded his as well as the team's first interception of the season tonight, on top of attaining two solo tackles and an important pass deflection in the second half. Quarterback Jeff Dover, starting his first game of the season, threw for 147 yards and two touchdown passes. Corey McCoy of the Blitz recorded three kick returns during the game, totaling for 109 yards, while J'Sharlon Jones recorded two for 59-yards and one touchdown.

LAST WEEK: SAN DIEGO VS. TULSA

RIPTIDE 48, TALONS 65 – MAY 24, 2003 – SAN DIEGO SPORTS ARENA

In a back and forth battle, it was three plays that turned the tide as the San Diego Riptide fell to the Tulsa Talons 65-48 Saturday night at the Sports Arena in front of 5,135.

Down 26-21 with seconds to go in the first half, Kane Claunch launched a 39-yard strike to Marty Graham, who was ruled out at the goal line. A failed Claunch keeper and the lack of timeouts ran out the clock and ruined a scoring opportunity.

The Riptide (4-4) turned over the ball on the first possession of the second half that turned into a 32-21 Talons lead.

Claunch tossed a career-high 343 yards, completed 70% of his passes with a passer rating of 133.8, but Brandon Daniels The Talons (7-1) scored on ten of eleven drives, including converting both Riptide turnovers into touchdowns.

Of note for the Riptide, Henry Stephens blocked his fifth kick on the season when he swatted down an extra point in the third quarter. Earlier in the game, he nabbed a 14-yard touchdown reception from Claunch.

Dwight Cater was named the game's Ironman after grabbing seven passes for 107 yards with two touchdowns. Altie Parker also grabbed two scores. Marty Graham returned a kickoff 57 yards for a score and hauled in a 15-yarder from Claunch. Overall, he compiled 196 all-purpose yards. The Riptide go on the road for the next two weeks visiting Bakersfield and then onto Green Bay. Those two teams played each other earlier in the evening with the Blitz topping the Blizzard 38-31.

Last week Baker connected on 3-of-4 field goals (18,21,24) and was three-for-three on extra point opportunities. Baker is currently ranked 3rd in the af2 in field goals connecting on 8-26 and holding a 30.8 percentage. He was the leading tackler last week in Green Bay recording 4 tackles (3-solo, 2-assisted). In addition to the tackles Myles added one pass deflection. Thus far, he has tallied 20.5 tackles which makes him the second leading tackler on the team only behind J'Sharlon Jones.

MR. ACCURATE: Quarterback Chad Elliott came in relief for Jeff Dover late in the third quarter last week against the Blizzard. Elliott came in and completed 8 consecutive passes and one touchdown before lofting one pass beyond the fingertips of wide receiver York Frierson. Last week versus the Green Bay Blizzard Mahanke out jumped the defender in the end zone to pull down the winning touchdown for the Blitz with eight seconds remaining. He finished the night as the second leading receiver on both teams with 6 grabs for 73 yards and a touchdown. Defensively he picked off quarterback Ramon Robinson for his second interception of the season and racked up three tackles including one for a loss.
