Rochester Brigade News Release

(Rochester, NY)-Today, head coach/general manager Mark Saunders announced that WR/DB Derek Baker has been assigned to the Rochester Brigade from the arenafootball2 league office.

"It's good to have him back... we welcome him with open arms," stated Saunders on Baker's return.

Baker was recently a member of the Buffalo Destroyers practice squad, after being signed in the off-season. Upon being waived to play for the Brigade the remainder of the 2002 season, Baker will return to an extended list of duties. Last season Baker was solely an offensive specialist for the Brigade; however, this season Baker will play two-ways as a wide receiver and a defensive back.

"Playing two-ways enhances his (Derek Baker's) marketability to further his career," commented Saunders. "I'm excited to see what he can do on defense... he's such a hard worker on the field I think he will do well."

While with the Destroyers, Baker played in two pre-season games at the Offensive Specialist position, catching three passes for 43 yards and one touchdown. He also returned four kick-offs for 121 yards, including a 55-yard return for a touchdown.

Last season Baker led the Brigade in all offensive categories, catching 80 passes for 1,273 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also returned 56 kick offs for 1,200 yards and four touchdowns. On the season, he ranked fifth in the league in All-Purpose yards with 2,619 yards for an average of 187.1 yards per game.

Baker will play in his first game this Friday, May 10, as the Brigade (2-3) takes on Northeast opponent the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (0-5) at the Blue Cross Arena. For more information on tickets, contact the Brigade at 585-292-1530 or check out the team website at www.rochesterbrigade.com.
