San Jose Giants News Release
Carter Williams and Riley Mahan hit dramatic back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday night to propel the San Jose Giants to a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark. Williams' two-run blast tied the game before Mahan's solo homer put the Giants ahead. The victory completed a sweep of the six-game series and was San Jose's (43-26, 3-0 second half) 11th consecutive win overall.
Williams' (4-for-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) home run was his fourth hit of the contest as part of a perfect night at the plate. Mahan (1-for-4, HR, RBI) connected for his fourth home run of the series while Ronaldo Flores (2-for-4, HR, RBI) went deep earlier in the game for the Giants. San Jose hit a whopping 18 home runs during the six-game series in Stockton this week.
With 11 straight wins, the Giants are now one victory away from matching their team record for longest winning streak (12 games in 2011).
San Jose jumped out early on Sunday with a single run in the top of the first inning. Grant McCray laced the first pitch of the game into the left center gap for a double, moved to third on Aeverson Arteaga's fly out and then scored on a Williams sacrifice fly.
The Ports immediately answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first off Matt Mikulski. With one out, Alexander Campos singled to start the rally. Back-to-back wild pitches then moved Campos to third before he scored on Junior Perez's two-out single.
A two-run top of the third inning then put the Giants back ahead at 3-1. McCray drew a leadoff walk before Arteaga lined a double into right center field. McCray advanced to third on the hit and then scored when the right fielder Marcos Brito mishandled the ball for an error. Williams was up next and he delivered an RBI single as Arteaga came home for a 3-1 advantage.
The lead would be short-lived though as Stockton rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning. Brito struck out to leadoff, but reached safely on Mikulski's third wild pitch of the game. After Campos singled and Max Muncy struck out, Perez stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run home run to left center. It was Perez's sixth homer of the year and it gave the Ports their first lead at 4-3.
Stockton added another run in the bottom of the fourth to chase Mikulski as T.J. Schofield-Sam led off with a double and scored on Brito's one-out single to make it 5-3.
Both teams scored once in the sixth inning with Flores hitting a solo homer to left in the top half. The home run was Flores' third in six games with the Giants this season. The Ports though got it right back in the bottom half on Perez's fifth RBI of the evening. With Jose Cruz on the mound, Campos drew a one-out walk before Perez came up with two down and smacked an RBI double into the right center field to stretch the Stockton lead to 6-4.
San Jose left two runners on base in the seventh before a double play ended a rally in the eighth. Down to their final three outs and still trailing by two runs, the top of the ninth began with Arteaga getting hit by a pitch. Williams then stepped to the plate and belted a 3-1 offering from Ports closer Hunter Breault over the fence in deep right center for a two-run home run. The 430-foot blast was Williams' fourth homer of the season and it tied the game 6-6. Mahan was up next and he drove an 0-2 pitch from Breault out to straightaway center for the go-ahead home run. Mahan's round-tripper traveled 423 feet as the Giants took back the lead at 7-6.
Hunter Dula was then summoned out of the bullpen to begin the bottom of the ninth and the right-hander escaped a Stockton rally to seal the victory. Muncy led off with a pop out to second before Perez lined out softly to shortstop for the second out. Jhoan Paulino though followed with a single to keep the Ports in the game. Nick Brueser was up next and he hit a towering fly ball down the left field line that hit high off the fence. Paulino, the potential tying run, advanced to third on the hit while Brueser, the winning run, stopped at first with a long single. Dula though would come back to retire pinch-hitter Shane McGuire on a fly out to left center to finish the game and keep San Jose's long winning streak intact.
Carter Williams had four hits on Sunday, including a game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning

11 Wins In A Row: The current 11-game winning streak is the longest by a San Jose team in 11 years. The Giants are now one victory away from matching the longest win streak in team history. The 2011 team had two separate 12-game winning streaks to set the club record.
Series Sweep: Sunday's victory gave the Giants their first series sweep of the season. San Jose scored 54 runs (9.0 per game) during the six-game set against Stockton. Two of the six victories came when the Giants trailed heading into the ninth inning. San Jose entered the week with only one win this season when trailing after eight innings.
Williams' Perfect Night: Carter Williams had two singles, one double, one home run and a sacrifice fly in his five plate appearances on Sunday. Williams hit a sizzling .652 (15-for-23) during the series with six doubles, two homers and 10 RBI's.

Bullpen Excels: A quartet of Giants relievers - Esmerlin Vinicio, Jose Cruz, Evan Gates and Hunter Dula - combined to pitch 5 2/3 innings with only one run allowed. Gates was credited with the win after tossing a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth. Dula earned his third save of the season.
On Deck: Following an off day, the Giants return home to open a six-game set against the Modesto Nuts. Tuesday's series opener is a 6:30 PM first pitch at Excite Ballpark. San Jose will be looking to tie the record for longest winning streak in team history. For tickets, visit sjgiants.com.
