Stockton Wolves News Release
DAILY CITY, Calif---Before Saturday night, it had been a few uncharacteristic weeks for the San Jose Wolves.
It didn't take long for the Wolves to return to form on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Omar Jacobs threw for six touchdowns and ran for another as the San Jose Wolves (5-1) got back to their winning ways with a 70-38 win against the Wenatchee Valley Venom (2-4) at the Cow Palace.
Jacobs was on fire in the first half, including four touchdown passes over fifteen yards completing nine of fifteen passes for 190 total yards. Two of those were forty yard strikes, the first a long lead pass on which receiver Reggie Eubanks made a spectacular grab falling into the end zone with a defender draped on his back. Just a few minutes later, Somora Goodson made a similar catch on the other side of the field as he was running laterally across the goal line.
"He started it and made some good throws and reads." Head Coach Bennie King said of his quarterback Jacobs. "We have a system that we run which allows us to make plays and what happened tonight was him being comfortable in the system."
The defense did more than just their fair share, as defensive backs Denario Smalls and Joey Robinson each intercepted Venom quarterback Ronnie Simpson. Simpson seemed very uncomfortable in the pocket and was consistently wild as a result. In the second quarter, Simpson tried to scramble but Marvin Brown delivered a devastating hit that jarred the ball lose and into the lap of Smalls. As Smalls was being tackled, he flipped the ball to Robinson who returned it forty yards for the score.
Wenatchee Valley had a pair of scores in the first; a kickoff return by Darrin Newsom and a touchdown pass from Simpson to Tim Simmons. However, San Jose overpowered the Venom in the first half and the Wolves found themselves up 48-12 at the break.
The pace of the game slowed down in the second half, but the Wolves had plenty of cushion. Still, a Wenatchee bad snap that bounced around in their own end zone allowed Leonard Moore time to get to Simpson, smashing the quarterback against the dasher boards for a safety. Jacobs added his fifth touchdown of the game, Bennett's second, shortly after.
The Venom tacked on a few scores near the end, including a second kickoff returned by Newsom.
Jacobs overcame the interceptions, finding Eubanks for a second time from sixteen yards out for some insurance. The defense rebounded as well, stopping Simpson on a scramble on fourth and one.
Overall, the game was a pleasant sight for General Manager and Head Coach Bennie King after the loss two weeks ago.
"When we are running the stuff that we're used to, we're pretty good." King said. "We came out here and executed. Execution is the name of the game and when we do that it's simple."
And as for the Wolves statistics being back to what they were prior to the road trip, King simply said, "We're back."
The Wolves play at home again next weekend, hosting the Ogden Knights on Saturday, May 8th at 7:15 pm at the Cow Palace.
