Binghamton Senators News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Binghamton Senators opened the first round of the 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs tonight at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Unfortunately the series got off to a less than perfect start for Binghamton as the Manchester Monarchs took game one of the Atlantic Division Semifinal series, besting Binghamton 2-1.
Corey Elkins scored the first goal of the best-of seven series, putting the Monarchs on the board just 2:19 into the second period. Patrick Mullen went streaking in on Barry Brust, faking a shot on goal to force the B-Sens netminder out of position. He then fed the puck to Elkins who was left to take advantage of a wide open net.
With Colin Greening off serving a hooking call late in the third, the Monarchs added to their lead as defenseman David Kolomatis beat Brust from the doorstep on the ensuing power play with just 3:35 remaining in regulation.
Brust was called to the bench in the waning minutes of regulation in favor of an extra skater. The B-Sens capitalized on the opportunity with 38.4 seconds remaining in the third as Ryan Potulny tipped a Derek Smith shot past Jeff Zatkoff to pull Binghamton within one. Manchester however would hold on for the victory, much to the delight of the crowd of 2,006 on hand.
Binghamton seeks to even the series tomorrow night as they return to the ice in Manchester for game two. Puck drops at 7 p.m. Fans can listen live on 680 WINR-AM or Team 1200 (Ottawa) beginning 30 minutes before the game for Countdown to Face Off with Grady Whittenburg, voice of the B-Sens.
