Axemen Sign Rookie of the Year

Bemidji, MN - The Bemidji Axemen have signed quarterback Cody Kirby, the team announced Friday.

"We're excited to have Cody join the squad," Axemen president Chris Kokalis stated. "He's a great player and an even better person."

Kirby spent time with the Nebraska Danger this season before being released earlier this week in favor of reigning IFL MVP Jameel Sewell. Through three games with the Danger, Kirby completed 40 of 76 passes for 502 yards and seven touchdowns. He proved to be an effective runner on the ground as well, rushing 27 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns.

Last season, his rookie year, Kirby completed 199 of 323 passes (62 percent) for 1,993 yards, 39 touchdowns, and six interceptions. On the ground, Kirby recorded 116 rushes for 388 yards and 13 touchdowns. At the conclusion of the season, Kirby was named IFL Rookie of the Year and earned Second Team All-IFL honors.

Kirby played college football at Missouri State University, setting numerous school records along the way. Kirby started four years for the Bears, finishing his collegiate career completing 690 of 1,172 passes for 8,183 yards and 47 touchdowns. He rushed for an additional 836 yards and 33 touchdowns throughout his career with Missouri State.
