Danville, IL - The Lafayette Aviators (31-25) split a doubleheader with their East Division rival Danville Dans (37-19) on Friday night in Danville.Game 1
The first four innings were scoreless between Lafayette and Danville. The Aviators starter Bryce Grossius (Southeast Missouri State) controlled the high-powered Dans order through the first half of the game. Through six innings, Grossius dealt seven strikeouts and held Danville to one on five hits.
Up 1-0 in the top of the sixth, the Lafayette bats came to life again. Blake Schmitt (Purdue) led off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to score Braedon Blackford (Illinois State). The next batter Miles Simington (Purdue), Schmitt's future teammate in West Lafayette, stepped up and rocked a three-run home run to put the Aviators up 5-0. The dinger was Simington's second homer of the season.
The Aviators scored again in the seventh from a Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) double to make it 6-1. Danville tacked on a run in the seventh, but the Aviators hung on to take game 1.
