
Avengers to take part in eight holiday events

LOS ANGELES -- On Nov. 23, the Los Angeles Avengers will start spreading holiday cheer throughout Southern California. The Avengers will begin their holiday season by serving Thanksgiving meals at the Los Angeles Mission and the Salvation Army Thanksgiving dinner at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The Avengers will continue the holiday spirit throughout the month of December by attending the Los Angeles Zoo Merry Members Nights, the Salvation Army's Kettle Kick Off, visiting the Orthopaedic Hospital of Los Angeles, interacting with the children at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times Holiday party, taking part in the 25th Annual "Miracle on 1st Street" toy giveaway at the Hollenbeck Youth Center and joining Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Burke and Mattel in their toy giveaway.
The Avengers also will be staging a food drive for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and collect gifts that will be given to the Hollenbeck Youth Center and the California Highway Patrol's toy drives.
"As an organization we are always looking to enrich the lives of our fellow community members, during the holiday season and throughout the year," Avenger owner and chief executive officer Casey Wasserman said. "The Avengers understand their role in the community and look forward to being apart of all these great holiday events."
Offensive specialist Tony Locke and defensive specialist Damen Wheeler, along with Wasserman and other Avenger front office staff members, will be serving holiday meals to the men, women and children of Hope Central at the Los Angeles Mission on Wednesday, Nov. 23. The Los Angeles Mission annual Thanksgiving event is one of the largest of its type in the country. This year the Mission will serve over 3,500 traditional turkey dinners. Members of the Avengers front office staff also will be serving food to the less fortunate at the Salvation Army Thanksgiving dinner at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Nov. 23. The Salvation Army, in order to serve the needs of each individual, will also be handing out toys, distributing food baskets and raising money to help support the work of the "Army." On Saturday, Dec. 2, Wheeler will be signing autographs at the Los Angeles Zoo's Merry Members Nights. Quarterback Ryan Van Dyke will do the same on Sunday, Dec. 3. Members will enjoy a holiday festival atmosphere that will include reindeer, a holiday light show, a chance to take a picture with Santa, music, food carts and much more. On Tuesday, Dec. 6, Avenger players and front office staff members will take part in the Salvation Army's Kettle Kick Off in Downtown Los Angeles. The Kettle Kick Off brings celebrities and volunteers together to help publicize the Salvation Army's Christmas kettles and remind people how important it is to give generously to help people in need. On Saturday, Dec. 10, Locke and Wheeler will interact with children who have cancer at the Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times holiday party. The camp is a magical place where children with cancer can recapture some of the precious childhood that their cancer has taken from them, and meet new friends who understand what they are going through. On Saturday, Dec. 17, Avenger players along with Santa Claus will hand out toys at the 25th Annual "Miracle on 1st Street" toy giveaway at the Hollenbeck Youth Center. The event is hosted by the Hollenbeck Police Business Council in conjunction with the Los Angeles Inner-City Games and the Los Angeles Police Department - Hollenbeck Division. Two city blocks in Boyle Heights will be closed as thousands of inner-city children will receive Christmas gifts in one of the City's largest toy giveaways.
Thirty of the hardest-hit families in the Los Angeles area will receive their Christmas wish-list in a VIP reception preceding the give-away at the Hollenbeck Youth Center.
