Avengers sign multi-year deal with XTRA Sports 690 & 1150

January 7, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Avengers, who are about to enter their fourth season of play in the Arena Football League, will have all 16 regular-season games and any postseason contests broadcast live on the radio on XTRA Sports 690 & 1150, which is the sports "super station" created by yesterday's merger of FOX Sports AM 1150 and XTRA Sports 690, Avenger president and chief operating officer Todd Merkow announced.

The 2004 Avenger season, which begins in less than four weeks, is included in the two-year deal and an option exists for a third season in 2005. In addition, all radio broadcasts will be accessible worldwide live over the Internet via www.laavengers.com or www.xtrasportsradio.com.

The vast area covered by XTRA Sports 690 & 1150 extends from the Mexican border to Central California, backed by 130,000 watts of power. The largest sports radio tandem in the country, both stations are anchored by Jim Rome and Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton. Rome is the premiere sports show host in the country and Hamilton is a local legend who has dominated the afternoon drive slot in Southern California for more than a decade.

"The powerful combination of these two stations will give the Avengers a great deal of exposure and increase the awareness of the franchise," Merkow said. "We couldn't be any happier with where sports fans will be to able find us on the radio dial and look forward to many exciting broadcasts."

XTRA Sports 690 & 1150 will feature live sports updates every 20 minutes and also serves as the flagship station for the UCLA Bruins and Los Angeles Clippers.

Larry Kahn will return for his fourth year as the radio play-by-play voice of the Avengers. A longtime broadcaster in the Los Angeles area, Kahn is also the national radio voice of the AFL's ArenaBowl world championship game and the lead play-by-play man for the Sports USA Radio Network's nationally syndicated "College Football Game of the Week" and "NFL Game of the Week."

The Avengers will open the 2003 season on Sunday, Feb. 2, versus the Las Vegas Gladiators at STAPLES Center. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. The Avenger pregame show will hit the air at 3:15 p.m.

As many as nine Avenger games will be televised on NBC (the AFL's new national television partner), including a Week 2 match-up against the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats on Feb. 9, at STAPLES Center. Six other Avenger games will be televised in Southern California, Nevada and Hawai'i on Fox Sports Net 2.

With NBC onboard, the upcoming 2003 season is expected to be a breakthrough for the 17-year-old Arena Football League. The network is slated to televise up to 70 AFL games (regular-season and postseason), including ArenaBowl XVII on Sunday, June 22.

Avenger season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com.

XTRA Sports 690 & 1150 is part of Clear Channel World Wide. For more details on Southern California's sports "super station," please visit www.xtrasportsradio.com.
