Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES - On Friday, June 15, Avenger defensive lineman Jason Stewart and members of the Metro Kidz spent the afternoon the visited with the youth at Carmelitos Public Housing in the city of Long Beach.

"It's very important for one to share my story with these kids," Stewart said. "I want these kids to know that going to school and believing in God can change your life."

At Carmelitos Public Housing, Stewart spoke to the youth about the importance of getting good grades, being involved in school activities and stressed the importance of being honest. He also let the youth know that this is the time to set a solid foundation for their futures through school and God. Stewart also answered questions from the youth and signed autographs.

Metro Kidz is a non-profit Christian organization dedicated to meeting the needs of hurting children, lost teens and confused parents in the impoverished neighborhoods of LA's inner-city. Reaching over 2,000 children each week, Metro Kidz focuses on changing a generation one child at a time. Cooperating with churches, community organizations and government agencies, Metro Kidz is making a difference

Today, in Los Angeles waiting outside of homes in the inner city are about 120,000 gang members in some 1,000 gangs. In a recent year over 2,200 area children under 18 were murdered. Where gang violence, drugs and crime are a way of life, it is the mission of Metro Kidz to effectively utilize the word of God for the teaching of morals, accountability, love, personal responsibility, forgiveness and a personal faith.

Metro Kidz believes it is better to build boys and girls than it is to repair men and women. This is proven weekly as they go out to ten different neighborhoods in their Sidewalk Sunday School Trucks. On the same day and time each week, their trucks pull into the most difficult inner-city neighborhoods to share the love of Christ with these kids. The sides of the trucks are transformed into stages and are used by staff and interns of Metro Kidz to perform exciting programs for the kids. With songs, games, Bible teaching, object lessons, puppets, skits, and loving friendship, these children are given hope.

The Avengers are currently 8-6. The team's next game will be on Sunday, June 17, when they play host to the Las Vegas Gladiators at STAPLES Center.
