LOS ANGELES - Even though it is their day off, Avenger players regularly take part in "Double Days" ... the team's community outreach program that makes visits to schools and/or hospitals each week.
On Sunday, defensive back Rushen Jones and defensive line coach Jonnie Williams joined United States Olympic Medalists Rusty Smith and Maria Cruz Garcia visited with children with cancer and their families at Padres Contra El Cáncer's Fourth Annual Feria de Esperanza at Woodbury University in Burbank.
"These kids have so much courage with everything that they are going through," Williams said. "For me, it was a true pressure to spend time with these kids."
At Feria de Esperanza, the Avenger representatives and Olympians spoke to the youth about the importance of getting good grades, being involved in school activities and stressed the importance of being honest. They also let the youth know that this is the time to set a solid foundation for their futures through school. The Avenger representatives and the Olympians also answered questions from the youth and signed autographs.
PADRES Contra El Cáncer (PADRES) is a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life for Latino children with cancer and their families. PADRES programs, activities and services, while primarily oriented to the Latino community, serve childhood cancer patients from ALL races and ethnic origins. No family is turned away.
Celebrating 20 years of service, PADRES brings together children, families, healthcare professionals and community leaders to promote a comprehensive understanding of childhood cancer and other blood disorders as well as effective methods for treatment. Fresh off a 57-51 victory over the Georgia Force on Saturday, the Avengers are currently 6-5. The team's next game will be on Saturday, May 26, when they hit the road to face the Kansas City Brigade.
