Avenger double days

Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES - Even though it is their day off, Avenger players regularly take part in "Double Days" ... the team's community outreach program that makes a pair of visits to schools and/or hospitals on either Monday or Tuesday each week.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, offensive/defensive linemen Rod Manuel and Charles Howard spent the evening visiting with more than 30 children at foster home in West Hills.

"I really enjoy taking the opportunity to talk to these kids," Manuel said. "Kids need positive role models in their life and I'm pleased that I was able to provide."

At the foster home, Manuel and Howard spoke to the youth about the importance of finding something that are good at and staying focused to obtain your goals. The two Avenger players also discussed being involved in school activities, such as sports. They also let the students know that this is the time to set a solid foundation for their futures through school. The two Avenger representatives also answered questions and signed autographs.

The visit was set up in conjunction with Project Nightlight, which uses short films, music, and apparel to grab kid's attention and inspire them to speak out against abuse. Project Nightlight provides volunteer guest speakers, after school programs, public service announcements, and printed materials to educate both children and adults on the truth about abuse. Project Nightlight works hard to change the negative social stigma associated with talking about abuse.

Of the 3 million abuse cases reported each year, less than 300 are reported by the child being abused. Physical abuse is reported most frequently because it is visible to others. Sexual abuse and neglect are rarely reported. Researchers estimate that less than one third of abuse is reported each year. This means that 6 million cases of abuse go unreported each year. In Los Angeles County alone, this means that potentially 100,000 children are living with abuse in addition to the 50,000 already in social care.

The Avengers (1-4) will return to action on Sunday, March 5, when they hit the road to take on the Orlando Predators (3-2) at the TD Waterhouse Centre. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. (Pacific) and the game will be televised on KNBC Channel 4 (Tom Hammond, Pat Haden, Lewis Johnson). The contest also can be heard on AM 570 (Isaac Lowenkron, Troy West).

Prorated Avenger season ticket packages are on sale now at 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com. Single-game tickets may be purchased at the STAPLES Center box office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com and by calling 213-480-3232.
