Austin Bold FC News Release
LAS VEGAS - In the inaugural contest in club history, Austin Bold FC (0-0-1) tied Las Vegas Lights FC (0-0-1), 0-0, in front of a crowd of 8,017 at Cashman Field on Saturday night. Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo picked up his first clean sheet of the season, as the Bold defense stifled a Lights FC attacked that attempted 17 shots in the match to earn a point on the road.
A physical first half saw the Bold with multiple scoring opportunities, but unable to capitalize on the chances. In the 12th minute when a corner kick from forward DarÃo Conca found defender Jermaine Taylor in the center of the box, only to see Taylor's header hover high. Ten minutes later, midfielder Sonny Guadarrama blasted a shot from outside the box, but it too sailed high. Defender Amobi Okugu redirected a cross from Sean McFarlane in the 31st that looked to be going past Lights goalkeeper Thomas Olsen, but Olsen managed to fall on the ball and making the save from his back.
After coming up short in the first half, the Las Vegas attack intensified in early in the second only to have multiple opportunities thwarted by the Bold defense. Twice the Lights put the ball in the net, only to have the goals called off - first on an offside call and second when it was clear that a Las Vegas throw-in never touched a player before crossing the goal-line.
ABFC's best scoring chance in the half started off a free kick from midfielder Calum Mallace, who found Clayton Adams sprinting up the right side. Adams sent a cross into the box to forward André Lima, but Olsen put a hand on the ball to disrupt the play.
The Bold will be back in action on Saturday, March 16, as they travel across the Silver State to Reno, Nevada to face Reno 1868 FC. Kickoff at Greater Nevada Field is slated for 4 p.m. CT and the match will be available on ESPN+.
