Austin Bold Battle to 0-0 Draw with New Mexico United
June 13, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Austin Bold FC News Release
Austin, TX On Saturday night, Austin Bold FC and New Mexico United battled to a 0-0 draw at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, NM. Another solid defensive performance saw The Bold limit New Mexico to zero shots on target for the entire ninety minutes on their way to a third clean sheet of the season. Austin had some chances with a Sean Okoli header early in the match and a deflected shot from Ates Diouf but couldn't find the back of the net. Like Isidro Martinez's strike in the second half, New Mexico's best chances were snuffed out by the resolute Austin defense. Austin Bold continues their four-game road trip this Wednesday as they travel south to take on division leaders RGVFC on ESPN+.
The first chance on target fell to Bold striker Okoli in the 8' when he connected with a Collin Fernandez corner kick. Okoli did well to break away from his mark but couldn't generate enough power to find the back of the net.
Owayne Gordon was an explosive outlet for Austin all match and had his best moment in the 27'. The Jamaican forward turned the corner on defender Daniel Bruce with a flick from a Diouf pass. With yards of space in front of him, Gordon charged towards the New Mexico goal but dragged his left-footed shot just wide of the net.
The home side's best chances came from Kalen Ryden during corner kick opportunities. In the 62', Ryden's header and follow-up strike were blocked by The Bold defense. Another Ryden header worried goalkeeper Elliot Panicco in the 76', but the New Mexico defender found his accuracy lacking at the vital moment.
Austin Bold FC returns to Bold Stadium on June 22 at 8:00 PM to take on Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. With single-game tickets starting at $15 and season ticket memberships starting at $190, every member of the Bold Familia has a way to cheer on their neighborhood soccer club.
Post Match Quotes:
Austin Bold FC Head Coach Marcelo Serrano on the team getting their third clean sheet of the season.
"I think it's important to point out that the culture we built since day one is translating on the field. A culture filled with hard work, grit, and togetherness. It was evident tonight, from front to back. We were organized defensively and everyone wore their hearts on their sleeves. Everyone stuck together. This league is hard. New Mexico is an amazing team. To come here to a tough environment and get this result is a job well done."
Serrano on the difference between tonight and the season opener a month ago in Albuquerque.
"The last time we were here it was our first game of the season. Now we have five games under our belt. The team started to show more confidence in each other and in their own ability. We knew this ability would eventually show itself and it did tonight."
Goalkeeper Elliot Panicco on the team's chemistry.
"The relationship that the team has is really starting to show on the field. We are a tight group that really cares about and fights for one another. This has allowed us to get good results on the road when our backs are against the wall. The whole group is playing very well and it is making my job easy."
