Austin Aztex News Release

AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Aztex (4-3-1) defeated Real Monarchs SLC in the first meeting of these two teams this season at House Park. After falling behind early in second half, the Aztex rallied with two goals in the final three minutes, including game-winning goal in the 92nd minute.

The Aztex took an early lead with a goal by Kris Tyrpak in the 15th minute, however the Monarchs were able to find an equalizer with a penalty by Max Rauhofer in the 40th minute. Following halftime, the Monarchs took the lead with a goal from Lucas Baldin off a free kick, however the Aztex found a late equalizer with a header from Kalen Ryden in the 88th minute, and found the game-winning goal in the 91st minute from Trevin Caesar.

The Real Monarchs began the half with an aggressive level of possession that resulted in two corner kicks in the first ten minutes of the match. Although the Monarchs had several shots on goal and the majority of possession, the Aztex were able to adjust their style of play enough to become more evenly matched with the Monarchs for the remainder of the half.

In the 10th minute, the Aztex made a run which resulted in a shot from Typrak after a cross from Lance Rozeboom, however their attempt was ultimately blocked by the Monarch's goalkeeper, Eduardo Fernandez. The Aztex were quick to make another run however, resulting in a 15th minute goal by Tyrpak, which was assisted by a cross from Drew Yates. The play on the goal was created through a throw in from Fernando Timbo, who hit Adam Bedell. Bedell one-touched the ball to Yates, who found Tyrpak at the back post.

Timbo of the Aztex also had a strong half in his USL debut, creating two runs in the 33rd and 45th minutes, however both shots were sent over the crossbar.

The remainder of the half had equal levels of possession from both the Monarchs and the Aztex, with both teams making several runs throughout the half. The Monarchs were able to find an equalizer with a penalty scored by Rauhofer in the 40th minute due to a foul inside the box by Austin's Mikey Ambrose on Monarch's forward Emery Welshman. Following the equalizer, the Monarchs finished the half with a cross across the face of the goal by Welshman, however the two trailing Monarch players were unable to hit the ball into the net from the far post.

Following halftime, the Monarchs took the lead with a 57th minute goal from Lucas Baldin after a free kick resulting from a Guaraci foul on Monarchs midfielder Velazco. The Monarchs remained aggressive throughout the half, however the Aztex were ready to return to their aggressive play. Both teams received three cautions within the second half as tensions rose with each team's fervor.

The Aztex were dominant in the last 15 minutes of the game with several attempts on goal as they tried draw the game even. Their first significant chance was in the 77th minute with a long throw in from Kyle Hoffer that was met by a Tyrpak header, but was ultimately wide of the goal. The Aztex quickly followed with a clear shot on goal by substitute Trevin Caesar that was sent wide of the goal.

Within the final ten minutes of the match the Aztex found some true momentum with a late equalizer in the 88th minute as Mozzi Gyorio's free kick found Kalen Ryden for a header that smashed into the back of the net. Following the equalizer, the Aztex would not settle for a draw as they continued to make several runs in the final minutes of the game.

In the 92nd minute, Trevin Caesar took a chance and hit a shot on goal from 30 yards out, which was initially saved by Monarchs goalkeeper Fernandez. However, Fernandez was unable to get a grasp on the ball as it slipped through his fingers and the ball crawled over the line for the Aztex game-winning goal.

The Austin Aztex will take to the road to take on Arizona United SC on Saturday, May 16th, before returning to House Park for the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, May 20 versus the winner of the Laredo Heat and NTX Rayados. The Aztex will then continue to home USL action on Saturday, May 23rd at 8:00 p.m. CT to face Tulsa Roughnecks FC. Tickets can be purchased online at www.austinaztex.com
