Aurora Cavalry News Release
The Aurora Cavalry kicked off their official 2006 campaign Friday with an exciting 140-132 victory over their league rival, the Colorado Crossover. Over 1,500 fans in attendance at Gateway High School saw exactly what the International Basketball League promises, a very fast-paced and exciting brand of basketball. The game was a pretense of things to come between the two teams.
Coach Dave Chapman's Crossover team dominated the first half, leading 67-56 at the break. The Crossover caught fire early and often and took advantage of a tight Cavalry team. The combination of a huge inside advantage and hot shooting had the Cavalry on their heels for the first two quarters. Guards Nick Mohr and Justin Kaliszewski in addition to forwards Jeremiah Mayes and Jermaine Williams helped lead the Crossover in the first half with 42 of the teams 67 points. Jamar Bohannon had 10 first half points and Michael Morse contributed 9 for the cold shooting Cavalry.
The Cavalry stepped it up in the second half thanks to a fiery halftime speech by coaches Dejon Jernagin and A.B. Maxey. After being held to 56 points in the first half, the Cavalry exploded in the second half with a 43 point third quarter and a 41 point fourth quarter. With a swarming defense and some timely three point baskets, the Cavalry overcame their early game jitters to prevail.
The front court battle clearly favored the Crossover, but it was the frenetic play of the Cavalry's backcourt that made the difference in the end. The Cavalry again displayed their balance with six players in double figures and all thirteen players getting on the scoreboard. Cavalry point guard Lamar Karim had 22 points to lead all scorers. Karim also had four assists and four rebounds for the Cavalry. Forward Sneed Deaderick and guard Leslie Richardson both sparked the second half explosion by scoring 13 of their respective 19 points in the last two quarters. Forward Phillip Hillstock, placed in a role of trying to stem the inside game of the Crossover, had 9 rebounds and 14 points. Morse and Bohannon finished with 15 and 12 points respectively. Bohannon also had three of the four blocked shots for the Cavalry.
The Cavalry play again on Friday, April 7th against the Cedar Valley (Iowa) Jaguars. Game time is 7:15 p.m. at Gateway High School in Aurora. Tickets are available at the door, by calling the Cavalry office at (303) 321-1053 or accessing the team's website: www. auroracavalry.com
