Fayetteville Guard News Release

The Fayetteville Guard met its match on Saturday, July 22, 2006. As the Guard walked on to the field at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, they did not receive a warm welcome from River City's fans but the few Guard fans that made the trek by plane and automobiles cheered them on.

The Guard started off with a 14 point lead over River City at the end of the first quarter with the score board reading Guard 22 - River City 8. By half time, River City had plowed through the Guard to boost their score by 20 points and they only allowed the Guard and additional 8 points to end the second quarter with a score: Guard 38 - River City 28.

With both teams eager for the Atlantic Conference Title, the second half was a nail biting, edge of the seat sitting battle for fans to watch. Both, River City and Fayetteville had offensive lines that were hard to stop. By the end of the third quarter the teams were tied at 50 points each. With only 2:57 left in the fourth, Fayetteville led 64-56. With 22 seconds left in regulation play the game was tied 64-64. At the end of the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 64-64 and River City and Fayetteville found themselves in an overtime match.

Fayetteville got first possession. They drove in, scored a touchdown and completed their 2 point conversion to take the score to Fay 72 - River City 64. Now it was River City's turn. River City scored their touchdown and needed the two point conversion to keep the game going. When River City's quarter back, Groefsema, threw the ball it was high and down the middle. A river City receiver jumped up and caught the ball as he was falling backwards over the out-of-bounds wall. The referees signaled that the ball was caught out-of-bounds and was no good. The game ended with a final score of Fayetteville 72 and River City 70 allowing the Guard to bring home the Atlantic Conference Championship title and trophy.

Fayetteville will play Billings Football for the National Indoor Football League Championship.
