Atlanta United 2 Suffers 2-0 Loss at Louisville City FC
July 17, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Atlanta United 2 News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Atlanta United 2 fell 2-0 to Louisville City FC Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium. Amadou Macky Diop recorded his first start of the season, while Atlanta United Academy player Noah Cobb started in his first professional game at the age of 15.
After splitting possession and trading shots, both clubs pushed forward to jump on the scoreboard in the closing minutes of the first half. Louisville's strongest opportunity came in the 41st minute when Cameron Lancaster headed a ball on frame just a yard away from the goal line, but Rocco Ríos Novo made the reaction save. A few minutes later in stoppage time, Atlanta's best look came when Caleb Wiley drove in a cross to Macky Diop in the six-yard box, where the forward was able to make contact with his left foot, but his shot was too high.
Louisville opened the second half with a goal in the 54th minute, when Kyle Grieg threaded a pass to Napo Matsoso in the box and the forward buried a one-time shot into the far side netting of the goal. James McLaughlin doubled Louisville's lead in the 63rd minute when he fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and it ricocheted off the crossbar and into goal.
ATL UTD 2 (3-6-5, 14 points) will return to action against FC Tulsa on July 28 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium (ESPN+, 7:30 p.m. ET).
