Atlanta United 2 News Release
KENNESAW, Georgia - Atlanta United 2 tied 1-1 against Ottawa Fury FC Tuesday at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in the resumption of its June 16 match that was suspended due to inclement weather. ATL UTD 2 held 70 percent possession and took 10 shots, but ultimately had to settle for a point which improved its home record to 3-1-4.
"I believe we had more of the ball, we had a specific way we wanted to attack them because they defend very deep," said ATL UTD 2 head coach Scott Donnelly. "For the most part, we did that. We created many more chances, and probably should have put one away."
The match picked up in the 44th minute with a score of 1-1. After completing the final minute of the first half plus stoppage time, the teams switched fields and began the second half. Kevin Oliveira nearly picked out the top-right corner in the 47th minute with a shot from the left side of the box while Devon Sandoval took an identical shot in the 51st, each narrowly missing.
Neither side produced many scoring opportunities until the 75th minute when Sandoval beat a pair of defenders to the end line and sent a low cross for Lagos Kunga who was on the edge of the six-yard box. However, the winger missed his attempt in front of goal and the ball skipped through the 18 for Ottawa to clear.
ATL UTD 2 continued to threaten in the next minute when Andrew Carleton delivered a corner kick to Kunga who was unmarked at the penalty spot, but his header drifted just over the crossbar.
Ottawa nearly grabbed a late goal in the 83rd minute when Adonijah Reid split a pair of Atlanta defenders inside the box and ripped a near-post shot to Mitch Hildebrandt's right. The goalkeeper deflected the shot off the left post which skipped to Steevan Dos Santos, but he failed to score off the rebound and Atlanta escaped with a goal kick.
ATL UTD 2 had two more opportunities with Alessandro Castro striking a left-footed shot from 25 yards out that sailed inches over the cross bar in the 87th minute, and AJ Cochran seeing a header rattle the crossbar in the 90th minute.
The original match began after a three-hour delay due to inclement weather. ATL UTD 2 scored in the third minute after Carleton forced an own-goal by Ottawa's Eddie Edward. Oliveira equalized for Fury FC in the 10th minute. Lightning in the area of Coolray Field forced the match to be abandoned in the 44th minute.
For Tuesday's contest, both teams were permitted to make a maximum of six changes to their lineup prior to the resumption of the match, while also retaining three substitutions.
ATL UTD 2 (3-11-7, 16 points) returns to action Saturday, August 11 against Charleston Battery at 7:00 p.m. EST at MUSC Health Stadium. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
