Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

ATLANTA - Ghanaian-born Silverbacks midfielder Kwadwo Poku has finalized a contract with Major League Soccer expansion-side New York City FC. The Silverbacks agreed to the transfer for an undisclosed fee.

"Atlanta will always be special to me; it was my first professional club," Poku said. "My coaches, teammates and supporters all made me into what I am and I am thankful for the support. I don't know how to express all of my appreciation.

"No matter what, the supporters never gave up on us. To hear my name in their chants and songs, that's something that gives me chills still. They made me feel at home and I feel like I always have to do my best and do everything for them."

The midfielder will join New York after 25 appearances and two goals with the Silverbacks. The Kumasi, Ghana, native will join NYCFC in its inaugural season in MLS play.

"Over the last year, we have been lucky to watch Poku emerge as a talent in our league, and a favorite among our fans" said Andy. "While the decision was difficult to make, we are confident to have acted in the mutual best interest of the Silverbacks organization, and Poku's bright future in our sport.

"We want to thank Poku for his hard work as a member of the Silverbacks, and wish him well on the bright career he has ahead."

The 22-year-old midfielder has sizzled in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play, dating back to his three seasons with the National Premier Soccer League's Georgia Revolution. His most memorable domestic cup matches include his 91st-minute clincher in the Silverbacks' upset over MLS-side Real Salt Lake in the fifth round of 2014, and a hat-trick in the Revolution's, 4-3, win over the Real Colorado Foxes in the first round of 2013.

The 6-foot-2-inch midfielder began playing with the Georgia Revolution in 2011 after coming to the stateside from Ghana in 2010. He immediately became the club's most dangerous attacking player, leading the team in scoring in both 2012-13 while contributing a team-high seven assists in 2013.

The Silverbacks open the NASL Spring Season on April 4 against the Indy Eleven at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The club is offering a special Home Opener Gift Pack, which includes four general admission tickets for only $48 (savings of $32 from box office price) or four reserved tickets for only $68 (savings of $52 from the box office price). To purchase tickets, call the Silverbacks Ticket Office at 404-969-4900.
